About the Company

Since 1959, the Alberta Construction Association (ACA) has been the voice of Alberta's institutional, commercial, and industrial construction sector. Through a network of eight Local Construction Associations, ACA represents more than 3,000 companies, including general contractors, trade contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers.

ACA advances industry interests through advocacy, industry standards, workforce development, and collaboration with government and industry partners.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair, the Executive Director provides strategic and operational leadership for the Alberta Construction Association.

The Executive Director works closely with the Board, Local Construction Associations, members, government, and industry stakeholders to advance ACA's strategic priorities and advocate for Alberta's non-residential construction industry. The role is responsible for organizational leadership, government relations, financial stewardship, stakeholder engagement, and execution of the Board's strategic direction.

ACA operates with a small team of three employees, including the Executive Director. As a result, the Executive Director is expected to be a hands-on leader who works collaboratively with staff while balancing strategic leadership with the day-to-day needs of the Association.

The successful candidate is a collaborative leader with strong political acumen, excellent relationship-building skills, and the ability to translate strategy into measurable results.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Planning

Work with the Board to develop and execute ACA's strategic priorities and long-term vision.
Monitor industry, economic, regulatory, and political developments and provide strategic advice to the Board.
Ensure ACA's programs, services, and resources align with member needs and organizational priorities.

Government Relations and Advocacy

Lead ACA's advocacy and government relations efforts.
Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, government representatives, and industry stakeholders.
Advance policy, legislative, regulatory, and procurement priorities affecting Alberta's non-residential construction industry.
Represent ACA's interests with government and external partners.

Organizational and Operational Leadership

Provide leadership for ACA's operations, programs, staff, and service providers.
Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing organizational culture.
Support effective governance by providing the Board and committees with the information and resources required for decision-making.

Financial Management and Organizational Sustainability

Ensure effective financial stewardship, budgeting, reporting, and resource allocation.
Support the long-term sustainability and growth of the Association.
Recommend and implement initiatives that enhance member value and organizational effectiveness.

Member, LCA and Stakeholder Relations

Maintain strong relationships with Local Construction Associations, members, Board Directors, and industry partners.
Facilitate engagement and collaboration across ACA's provincial network.
Build partnerships that strengthen the voice and influence of Alberta's construction industry.

Communications and Industry Profile

Serve as ACA's primary spokesperson and ambassador.
Represent ACA at government, industry, and stakeholder events.
Promote ACA's priorities, achievements, and value to members and external audiences.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience

Senior leadership experience (minimum 10 years) within an industry association, business organization, or comparable environment.
Experience in the construction industry or a related sector is considered an asset.
Background in not-for-profits, trades associations, public affairs, government relations is an asset.
Equivalent combination of education and senior leadership experience will be considered; formal education in business, public administration, political science, construction management/technology or a related field is an asset.
Eligible to meet the requirements to act as ACA's registered lobbyist.
Demonstrated success in government relations, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement.
Understanding of public policy, government decision-making, and political processes.
Experience leading organizational planning, budgeting, and financial management.
Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
Strong communication, relationship-building, and consensus-building skills.
Strategic thinker with the ability to identify opportunities, manage risk, and drive results
