Original job description
ImpactHR is pleased to be partnering with District Mechanical on an exciting search for their next Purchaser. We work closely with our clients to understand not just the role, but the people and culture behind it, and this is one of those opportunities we’re genuinely excited to share. If you’re a purchasing professional in construction wondering what your next move looks like, read on. This could be the career-defining step you’ve been waiting for.
About District Mechanical
Are you a purchasing professional who wants to do more than process orders and have a real hand in how projects get built? District Mechanical is looking for a Purchaser ready to take ownership of procurement and to grow alongside a company where your work is seen and valued.
District Mechanical is an employee-owned mechanical contractor based in Edmonton, Alberta. The company delivers complex institutional, commercial, healthcare, industrial and large-scale residential projects across Alberta, and it has significant opportunities for continued growth. This is an opportunity to join a hands-on, entrepreneurial environment where initiative is valued, ideas are welcomed, and individual contributions make a meaningful impact.
As a key member of the operations team, you will work closely with project managers, site teams, suppliers and the fabrication facility. Your job is to make sure the right materials and equipment arrive at the right place, at the right time and at the right cost. Along the way, you will gain exposure to the operational and financial side of a growing construction business.
Who You Are
You are a purchasing professional with 3+ years of experience, ideally in construction, mechanical contracting, plumbing, HVAC or an industrial setting. You know that a late delivery can stall a crew and a smart buy can protect a project’s margin, and you take pride in managing both.
You are organized, persistent and comfortable juggling multiple projects and deadlines at once. You build strong relationships with suppliers, negotiate with confidence, and look for better ways to source and buy. You are comfortable working with systems and data, and you enjoy being the person project teams rely on to make things happen.
Most importantly, you take ownership of your work and are interested in building a long-term career with a company where your growth can align with the growth of the business.
Key Responsibilities
This role will evolve based on your experience, strengths, and career objectives. As part of the operations team, you will be accountable for:
Procurement
- Sourcing and Purchasing: Source and procure mechanical materials, equipment, tools and services for construction projects.
- Quotes and Supplier Evaluation: Obtain and evaluate supplier quotations, weighing price, availability and delivery schedules to secure the best overall value.
- Purchase Orders: Issue purchase orders and track each order through to delivery.
- Cost Savings: Identify cost-saving opportunities, alternative products and alternative procurement strategies.
- Supplier Relationships: Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and manufacturers. Resolve purchase order discrepancies, delivery issues and supplier concerns as they arise.
Project and Operations Support
- Delivery Coordination: Coordinate material deliveries with project managers, site teams and the fabrication facility so work stays on schedule.
- Inventory and Prefabrication Support: Monitor inventory levels and support warehouse and prefabrication operations.
- Budgeting and Material Planning: Support project managers with budgeting, forecasting and material planning.
- Records and Documentation: Maintain accurate purchasing records and procurement documentation.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of purchasing or procurement experience, preferably in construction, mechanical contracting, plumbing, HVAC or industrial environments.
- A strong understanding of construction materials and procurement processes. Knowledge of mechanical construction materials and equipment is highly desirable.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with suppliers, field crews and project managers.
- Excellent organization and time management, and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at once.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with ERP, project management or purchasing software considered an asset.
- A proactive, hands-on approach, with the initiative to identify opportunities and take ownership of responsibilities.
Why Join District Mechanical?
A career, not just a job. This is an opportunity to build your career with an employee-owned company that offers the potential for long-term growth and advancement.
Real ownership of your work. Be the go-to purchasing resource for the business, with the trust and autonomy to shape how materials and equipment are sourced and bought.
How to Apply
If you are a purchasing professional looking for a role where your expertise is valued and your growth is supported, we would love to hear from you.
