About the job

ImpactHR is pleased to be partnering with District Mechanical on an exciting search for their next Senior Accountant. We work closely with our clients to understand not just the role, but the people and culture behind it, and this is one of those opportunities we’re genuinely excited to share. If you’re a CPA in public practice wondering what your next move looks like, read on. This could be the career-defining step you’ve been waiting for.

About District Mechanical

Are you a driven accounting professional who wants to contribute beyond the numbers and build a long-term career within a growing business? District Mechanical is looking for a Senior Accountant ready to take their career to the next level, fast tracking to leadership and offering potential ownership opportunity!

District Mechanical is an employee-owned mechanical construction company based in Edmonton, Alberta, with significant opportunities for continued growth. This is an opportunity to join a hands-on, entrepreneurial environment where initiative is valued, ideas are welcomed, and individual contributions can make a meaningful impact. Working closely with the CFO, ownership, and senior leadership, you will gain exposure to the financial and operational aspects of the business while developing the skills and experience to advance to leadership.

Who You Are

You are a CPA with approximately 2–5 years of public accounting experience who is ready to make the move into industry. You have built a strong foundation in accounting and financial reporting, and you are looking for an opportunity to apply that knowledge in a more hands-on business environment.

You are curious about how businesses operate, motivated to learn, and eager to take on challenges beyond traditional accounting responsibilities. You want to understand the bigger picture, contribute to business decisions, and develop into a trusted financial leader.

Most importantly, you are ambitious, take ownership of your work, and are interested in building a career with a company where your growth can align with the growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

This role will evolve based on your experience, strengths, and career objectives. As part of the finance team, you will be accountable for:

Financial Reporting and Analysis: Support financial reporting, account reconciliations, month-end processes, and financial analysis to help ensure accurate and timely financial information.
Business and Operational Insight: Develop an understanding of the company's operations, financial performance, and key business drivers beyond traditional accounting functions.
Management Reporting: Help prepare financial reports and analysis that provide meaningful insights to the CFO and senior leadership team.
Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and enhance the efficiency and accuracy of financial reporting.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with colleagues across the business to understand operational challenges, support financial decision-making, and contribute to company-wide initiatives.
Strategic Exposure: Gain firsthand insight into business planning, financial strategy, and the decisions that support a growing construction company.
Increasing Responsibility: Take on new projects and responsibilities as your knowledge of the business develops and the company continues to grow.

Qualifications

CPA designation, with approximately 2–5 years of experience in public accounting.
A strong foundation in accounting principles, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
A genuine interest in transitioning from public practice into an industry role.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and confidence working with accounting and financial systems.
The ability to communicate financial information clearly and work effectively with colleagues at all levels.
A proactive, hands-on approach, with the initiative to identify opportunities and take ownership of responsibilities.
A desire to learn the business, contribute beyond the accounting function, and grow into a broader leadership role over time.

Why Join District Mechanical?

A career, not just a job. This is an opportunity to build your career with an employee-owned company that offers the potential for long-term growth and advancement.Exposure to senior leadership. Work closely with the CFO, ownership, and senior leaders, gaining insight into the financial and strategic decisions that shape the business.

Broader business experience. Move beyond traditional accounting and develop a deeper understanding of how a growing mechanical construction company operates.

Room to grow. As the business expands, you will have opportunities to take on increasing responsibility, develop new skills, and shape your own career path.A potential path to executive leadership. For the right individual, this opportunity could be the starting point for a long-term leadership journey, with the potential to progress toward a future CFO role.

Competitive Salary and Benefits. Long term earning potential of this role has the potential to exceed traditional salary expectations through profit sharing, as well as an RRSP matching program to name a few of the benefits included in this role.
