Impossible Metals Canada is looking for an experienced, execution-focused Engineering Project Manager to help plan, coordinate, and drive complex multidisciplinary engineering projects involving robotics, subsea systems, electrical and mechanical systems, software, manufacturing, testing, and offshore operations. As a fast moving technology startup we endeavor to move at a pace that is unparalleled. In a small team maintaining schedule and alignment is more manageable but as we grow, in order to maintain our aggressive pace, you will play a critical role.
This role sits at the intersection of engineering, operations, procurement, fabrication, testing, and field deployment. You’ll work closely with engineering leadership to turn technical objectives into executable project plans, keep cross-functional work moving, identify risks and dependencies, and provide clear visibility into project status. We’re looking for someone who is energized by complex technical projects, comfortable working in a fast-moving startup environment, and able to bring structure and accountability to work where designs evolve, testing uncovers new problems, and priorities can change quickly.
This is not a purely administrative project management role. You’ll need enough technical understanding to work effectively with engineers, ask the right questions, challenge assumptions, and understand how work across different disciplines fits together. Technical leads and engineers will continue to own engineering decisions; you will own the coordination and execution framework that helps the overall project succeed.
What you’ll own
- Developing and maintaining integrated project plans for engineering development, prototype builds, system integration, testing, and deployment activities
- Translating technical objectives into clear milestones, deliverables, owners, dependencies, and timelines
- Coordinating work across mechanical, electrical, software, controls, manufacturing, operations, and field teams
- Working with technical leads to establish realistic schedules and ensure priorities, dependencies, and resource requirements are understood
- Tracking project progress and proactively identifying schedule risks, resource constraints, blockers, and competing priorities
- Driving resolution of cross-functional issues and escalating decisions when appropriate
- Leading project planning meetings, status reviews, action tracking, risk management, and other project cadences
- Coordinating engineering activities with procurement, suppliers, fabrication partners, logistics, testing, and operations
- Supporting planning and execution for prototype builds, test campaigns, mobilizations, vessel integration, and offshore or field deployments
- Planning around long-lead materials, external vendors, equipment availability, testing facilities, and other critical dependencies
- Ensuring decisions and changes affecting project scope, timing, cost, or system integration are documented and communicated to the appropriate teams
- Providing concise, accurate reporting to engineering and company leadership on project status, upcoming milestones, risks, and decisions required
- Improving and standardizing project management practices as the engineering organization grows
- Leading post-project and post-deployment reviews and ensuring lessons learned are incorporated into future planning
What does success look like?
By the end of your first six months, we’ll know we made the right hire because:
- You have developed a project management approach for Impossible Metals: Major workstreams have defined milestones, owners, dependencies, and appropriate schedules, and teams understand how their work connects to the broader program.
- Risks and dependencies are being identified earlier: Resource conflicts, procurement constraints, technical dependencies, and schedule risks are being surfaced and addressed before they become last-minute emergencies.
- Engineering execution is more coordinated and visible: Technical leads spend less time chasing cross-functional coordination, while engineering and company leadership have a reliable view of project status, priorities, risks, and decisions required.
What we’re looking for
- Several years of experience managing engineering, product development, or other technically complex projects
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and projects involving multiple technical workstreams
- Experience managing schedules that have a high level of uncertainty and change throughout the project.
- Experience managing projects involving physical products, hardware development, manufacturing, system integration, testing, or field operations
- Strong ability to develop and maintain project schedules, milestones, dependencies, risk registers, and action tracking
- Ability to understand how delays, design changes, resource constraints, or decisions in one technical area affect the broader system and project plan
- Strong technical literacy and the ability to participate meaningfully in engineering discussions without needing to be the technical authority
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with engineers, technical leads, operations personnel, suppliers, and senior leadership
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams and changing priorities
- Ability to bring structure to ambiguous projects without creating unnecessary process or bureaucracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to clearly communicate what is on track, what is at risk, why it is at risk, and what action or decision is required
- Comfort challenging assumptions, following up on commitments, and holding teams accountable to agreed deliverables
- Strong judgment regarding when to resolve an issue within the team and when escalation is required
- Ability to thrive in a fast-moving startup environment
- Alignment with Impossible Metals’ mission and values
Nice to have
- Experience in robotics, marine systems, subsea technology, aerospace, automotive, industrial automation, heavy equipment, or another complex engineered-product environment
- Experience supporting prototype development through design, build, integration, testing, and field deployment
- Experience managing projects that combine mechanical, electrical, software, controls, and operational workstreams
- Experience coordinating external engineering firms, fabrication vendors, manufacturers, or other technical suppliers
- Experience with engineering change control, configuration management, requirements management, or systems engineering processes
- Experience planning test programs, field trials, vessel mobilizations, commissioning activities, or other operationally complex technical work
- Experience working with long-lead procurement and hardware supply chains
- Experience working in a small, high-growth technology company
- Engineering, engineering technology, project management, or related post-secondary education
- PMP or similar project management certification
Why join us
You’ll have real ownership over how complex engineering projects come together and the opportunity to help build technology that has the potential to change how critical minerals are collected. As Impossible Metals Canada scales, this role will have a direct impact on how effectively our engineering organization plans and executes increasingly complex robotic systems, prototype builds, testing programs, and offshore deployments. You’ll also have the opportunity to help build the project management practices we use as the company grows, rather than stepping into a mature organization where those systems are already fixed.
