Why join us?

The IESO is committed to ensuring Ontario’s electricity system meets the province’s needs today and into the future. We are charged with purpose, delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity for homes, businesses, and communities across the province. We are energized to grow, embracing opportunities to shape the future of a dynamic and evolving energy sector while advancing our careers. We are powered by teamwork, supported by diverse and passionate colleagues who foster respect, celebrate successes, and thrive on shared achievements. At the IESO, it’s not just what we do - it’s who we are!

Who we are

Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come.

This is a unionized position that falls within the Metering Registration and Integration team with the Markets and Reliability Business Unit.

What makes this role exciting

The energy sector is rapidly evolving, offering exciting new opportunities for those who want to make a difference.

The successful candidate will provide technical and analytical support related to the administration and application of the revenue metering and meter data management functions for settlement of the IESO administered market as well as various provincial electricity programs and policies. Assist in the development and maintenance of appropriate processes, systems, procedures and standards within the Wholesale Metering department of the Settlement Division as related to maintaining the metering registry and the metering database.

What you’ll do

In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

Assist in the development and maintenance of appropriate processes, systems, procedures and standards to support the revenue metering and meter data management functions for the IESO-administered market.
On an on-going basis assist in reviewing the effectiveness of existing revenue metering and meter data management processes and contribute to the development and implementation of effectiveness and efficiency improvements as necessary.
Provide technical and analytical support and training to both internal and external customers as related to revenue metering and meter data management accountabilities. Investigate customer inquiries or complaints, or provide support to settlement staff investigating such inquiries or complaints.
Provide support and assistance in one or more of the following areas:
Developing and maintaining the functional specifications for revenue metering including site documentation and totalization tables, on-site communication equipment and systems, meter data acquisition system interfaces and meter data management processes and requirements.
Tracking and processing document submissions in support of the meter registration and meter data management business process including audit activities. Analyze and review revenue metering proposals, commissioning reports, post-installation audit reports, Meter Service Provider conformance monitoring to confirm compliance with market rules, policies and procedures. Identify non-compliances and communicate these concerns to senior Settlement staff, as necessary.
Maintaining records, work methods, policies and procedures relating to the market rules and legislation. This includes development and maintenance of market manuals, internal settlement guidelines, system documentation, training packages and tracking tools as related to revenue metering and meter data management business processes.
Producing user requirements for associated application software, performance acceptance testing and the identification of business requirements in support of business objectives. Implement appropriate settlements processes/adjustments applied when data is missing/incorrect, contractual requirements are not met, and/or “ad hoc” situations, at the direction of senior Settlement staff.
Preparing and analyzing data and information including estimation of meter data, settlement adjustments for notice of disagreements (NODs) and disputes for application to settlement statements, for use in settlement decision-making, to meet corporate financial reporting requirements and as negotiated with other business units or customers.
Perform other duties as required.

In a typical day, you will be involved in supporting the ongoing operation and improvement of revenue metering and meter data management processes within the IESO-administered market. You would review system performance and data quality, helping identify efficiency improvements while ensuring compliance with market rules and standards. The role also includes responding to stakeholder inquiries by providing technical analysis, investigating issues, and supporting settlement-related concerns. Additionally, you would assist with documentation, audit activities, and analysis of metering data, contributing to accurate settlements and regulatory reporting. Collaboration with internal teams and external partners is a key part of ensuring reliable data management and continuous process improvement.

Role Requirements

Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

Requires knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control, mathematics and computer sciences to carry out engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the application and performance of revenue metering installations, meter data management and settlement activities. Requires good written and oral communication skills in order to prepare effective reports, process description/user guides, system documentation and to deal effectively with internal and external contacts involved in accomplishing work objectives.
This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of 4 years University education, or by having the equivalent.
Requires exposure to system and market operations and an understanding of applicable market rules, legislation and practices related to revenue metering, meter data management and settlement activities.
Requires a good understanding of the electrical utility industry and experience in meter data management and revenue metering systems including applicable regulatory requirements, equipment characteristics, installation and field practices, maintenance practices and loss adjustment methodologies.
Requires experience to become familiar with the nature of studies and investigations carried out by the different sections and groups of the organization. Requires experience to become familiar with statistical and database software, desktop software applications, various PC-based query and calculation tools and computer system interfaces. Requires further on-the-job experience to become familiar with methods and practices associated with the work functions. Requires experience in providing advice to others including good customer service skills.
A period of over 4 years and up to and including 6 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
