JOB DESCRIPTION:
Insight Global is looking for a Labour & Employment Counsel to join a leading national organization and serve as a trusted legal advisor on a broad range of employment and labour law matters across Canada. This individual will partner closely with Human Resources and business leaders to provide practical legal guidance on employee relations, workplace investigations, accommodations, human rights issues, terminations, and employment risk management.
The successful candidate will play a key role in managing employment-related disputes and litigation, including wrongful dismissal claims, workplace conduct matters, tort litigation, professional liability issues, and asset protection claims. They will develop legal strategies, prepare mediation and settlement materials, oversee external counsel, and ensure matters are handled effectively from initial assessment through resolution.
This role also involves advising on labour relations matters, including collective agreement interpretation and unionized workforce issues, while supporting workplace investigations related to misconduct, harassment, code of conduct violations, and workplace violence concerns. The individual will provide guidance on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) matters, support cross-border employment law initiatives, and help the business proactively identify and mitigate legal and employment-related risks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Called to the Ontario Bar in 2019 or earlier.
- LL.B. or J.D. and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Experience practicing at a law firm with a focus on labour and employment law.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian employment legislation, labour laws, and case law across multiple provinces.
- Experience advising on wrongful dismissal matters, employee terminations, and employment disputes.
- Experience managing litigation matters, including tort and bodily injury claims.
- Knowledge of asset protection, professional liability, workplace misconduct, and workplace violence investigations.
- Expertise advising on human rights matters, accommodations, disability management, family status, religion, and other protected grounds.
- Experience supporting workplace investigations and employee relations matters.
- Proven ability to manage external counsel and litigation strategy.
- Experience handling harassment complaints, code of conduct issues, and workplace misconduct investigations.
- Comfortable working onsite five days per week in a collaborative office environment.
NICE TO HAVE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting a large retail or consumer-facing organization.
- Strong understanding of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) legislation and workplace safety requirements.
- Previous in-house counsel experience supporting HR and business stakeholders.
