Invalid Symbol is an Ontario-based, boutique production studio solidifying its core game team for MOJII, a cinematic sci-fi action-adventure game (PC) set in a collapsing Megacity. KID, a young disabled hacker, navigates a dangerous future alongside MOJII, their support droid companion. The game combines parkour, exploration, environmental interaction and character-driven storytelling.
THE ROLE
We're looking for an Art Director to define and lead the game's visual identity through production. This is a hands-on creative leadership role for an artist who can help evolve our cyberpunk-heavy prototype into a distinctive visual world drawing on comics, anime and street culture.
You'll own the game's overall visual direction and quality bar across characters, environments, props, animation, VFX, lighting, UI and cinematics. Working closely with Creative, Design, Engineering, Technical Art, Animation and Production departments, you'll turn creative vision into a coherent and achievable visual language.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Define and maintain MOJII's visual identity, style and quality bar
- Establish direction across characters, environments, props, materials, lighting, VFX and cinematics
- Create and communicate visual references, mood boards and style guides
- Lead and provide clear, constructive feedback to artists, contractors and external partners
- Collaborate across Creative, Design, Animation, Technical Art, Engineering, UI/UX and Production
- Review assets and builds to ensure visual cohesion, quality and consistency
- Develop practical art workflows and pipelines that support efficient production
- Balance visual ambition with performance, scope, schedule and PC requirements (& console, potentially)
- Identify visual and technical risks and help solve them early
- Participate in milestones, playtests, builds and final polish
- Stay current with emerging game-art technologies and production workflows
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 5+ years professional experience in game art, animation, VFX, film/animation or related visual production, including demonstrated art-direction responsibility
- At least one shipped/released game
- Strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual taste, storytelling and creative judgment
- Experience establishing and maintaining visual direction across a substantial project
- Strong understanding of composition, colour theory, lighting, materials, environments, characters and visual storytelling
- Ability to give feedback, mentor artists and raise the quality bar
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to make practical creative decisions within production constraints
- Familiarity with Unity or comparable game engines and real-time rendering/optimization
NICE TO HAVE
Experience with:
- Cinematic or narrative-driven games
- Third-person action-adventure
- Sci-fi / speculative worlds
- Stylized realism and cinematic visual development
- Real-time VFX, lighting, technical art or procedural workflows
- Tech-forward creative or production tools
