Original job description
At IPS, we are global leaders in developing innovative solutions for consulting, architecture, engineering, project controls, procurement, construction management, and commissioning, qualification, and validation (CQV) of technically complex facilities, primarily in the life sciences industry. We are seeking a talented Senior Electrical Engineer to join our dedicated team in Ottawa, Ontario.
In this role, you will work independently on multiple projects as assigned by a Manager or Group Lead. You may lead the complete electrical design process, serve as a technical expert for specialized designs, and coordinate the work of engineers and designers across several concurrent projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform as Electrical Project Lead through project phases including feasibility studies, building assessments, conceptual design, basis of design, detailed design, construction administration, commissioning, and project closeout.
- Assess project requirements, divide projects into manageable tasks, and work with the Project Manager to establish the scope of work, budget, schedule, and staffing requirements.
- Prepare electrical design scopes of work based on preliminary assessments and client meetings.
- Prepare engineering studies, reports, calculations, and schematic designs for new electrical systems.
- Review and assess the operation, capacity, condition, and code compliance of existing electrical systems.
- Prepare and review electrical drawings and technical documents, including single-line diagrams, riser diagrams, equipment layouts, schedules, specifications, and design details.
- Coordinate with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, utilities, vendors, and authorities having jurisdiction, and alert the Project Manager to potential changes in scope, schedule, budget, or resourcing.
- Work with code officials and other design professionals when interpretations, variances, or alternative solutions are required.
- Assign work to project team members, review progress and technical quality, and provide clear markups and direction for drawing revisions.
- Perform and review electrical engineering calculations, including service and feeder sizing, load flow, voltage drop, short-circuit, protective-device coordination, arc-flash, equipment-capacity, and underground cable ampacity calculations.
- Prepare and review construction cost estimates and budgets, and review contractor progress payment applications.
- Coordinate project-document completion internally and externally, and provide electrical engineering support during procurement, construction, commissioning, warranty, and closeout.
- Promote and contribute to company design, production, and quality-management standards.
- Mentor engineers and designers, provide technical guidance, and support staff development.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited Canadian university, or an equivalent engineering degree recognized in Canada.
- Approximately 8 to 10 years of progressive electrical engineering and building-design experience, including power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, fire alarm, branch circuitry, and related building systems.
- Currently licensed and in good standing as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario. The successful candidate must also be eligible and willing to obtain professional engineering registration in other Canadian provinces and territories, as required by project assignments.
- Approximately 2 to 4 years of experience coordinating or overseeing engineers and designers on project teams.
- Strong knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, including the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, and Ontario amendments.
- Strong knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, and applicable provincial, municipal, utility, and authority requirements.
- Working knowledge of applicable Canadian standards, including CSA Z462 for workplace electrical safety, CSA C282 for emergency electrical power supply for buildings, and CAN/ULC standards applicable to fire alarm systems.
- Proficiency in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD for the preparation, coordination, and review of electrical design documents. Experience with electrical calculation or power-system analysis software such as SKM PowerTools, ETAP, or EasyPower.
- Experience with medium-voltage systems, hazardous locations, telecommunications systems, standby and emergency power, UPS systems, and critical power distribution.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors, authorities having jurisdiction, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, nutraceutical, or broader life sciences industries.
- Experience designing laboratories, cleanrooms, manufacturing facilities, or other technically complex and regulated environments.
- Experience coordinating with the Electrical Safety Authority, local utilities, municipalities, and other Canadian authorities having jurisdiction.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods, and to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb ladders as required.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 11 kg (25 lb).
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments with varying site conditions.
- Ability to follow client-site safety requirements and strict cleanroom gowning protocols where applicable.
Travel:
- Approximately 5% to 20% travel, or as required by assigned projects.
- Extended assignments at client sites and overnight stays may be required, depending on the project.
- Access to reliable transportation and the ability to commute to project and client sites on a routine basis are required.
- Employees must comply with the IPS Travel Policy and all applicable client-site safety rules.
Safety and Interviews:
- This is a safety-sensitive position involving field work at construction, process, packaging, manufacturing, research, and other non-administrative areas.
- Interviews may be conducted in person or virtually. Candidates participating in virtual interviews will be required to use video.
