Original job description

Are you an experienced CAD drafting technician, or a recent graduate, looking to build a long-term career in municipal water and wastewater infrastructure? Do you want direct exposure to Plant 3D, Revit, and cross discipline design coordination, with a senior mentor guiding your growth from day one? If you take pride in precise, dependable drafting work and want to grow into a broader design and coordination role over time, we want to hear from you.

A Little About Us

We are engineers, technologists, planners, landscape architects, scientists, and their support teams that work together to deliver infrastructure, minimizing environmental impact and maximizing benefit to the community. We work hard and play hard because that is what #ISLLIFE is all about. Check us out on Instagram, X, and LinkedIn.

ISL's water/wastewater team delivers design for treatment, conveyance and storage infrastructure across Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. We are committed to finding, mentoring, and growing the right individuals and our team approach is integral to our success through:

Continuous Improvement – we are never satisfied with the status quo and are always looking to find a better way to get the job done.
Fun, Flexible, Hybrid Work Environment – culture is key, and we foster a strong team culture in multiple ways. We understand the dynamic nature of work and personal life, so we offer a flexible hybrid work environment to help facilitate success in both.
Ongoing Development – we have a culture of mentorship that supports your career plans and uses both firsthand and formal training opportunities (internal and external) to build a versatile, well rounded skill set, fully funded.
Interesting, Varied Work – no two days are the same. You will primarily support and coordinate the process and buildings mechanical aspects of treatment plants, pump stations, reservoirs, and related municipal infrastructure across multiple provinces. However, there will be times when the structural and electrical disciplines are working through a peak and need our help.

A Little About You

Your cover letter should demonstrate:

Your approach to drafting work as both part of a team and independently.
Your approach to time management and reprioritizing across multiple project deadlines.
Your organizational and detail-oriented skills.
What interests you about municipal water/wastewater infrastructure and long-term CAD/design work.

Your resume should show us:

Post secondary education in a drafting, design, engineering, or a related technical program, including anticipated graduation date (if applicable), and/or
Relevant hands-on drafting or design experience – we are open to recent graduates as well as candidates with a few years of experience.

Bonus points for:

Experience with Autodesk Plant 3D – this is a strong asset, given the vital role Plant 3D plays in our process mechanical design work.
Experience with other Autodesk platforms including Revit.
Real world field or industry experience where candidates have worked in a municipal or industrial facility, a construction site, or a related trade bring valuable practical context to drafting and design work.
Registration (or eligibility for registration) with a regulatory body such as ASET or APEGA.
Exposure to laser scanning, specification production, or BIM coordination across multiple disciplines.
Application of tools to automate drafting tasks and cross checking (e.g., Dynamo, Python, Artificial Intelligence, etc.).

A Little More About the Role

This role directly supports our senior water / wastewater technologist by taking on and delivering core 2D and Plant 3D drafting work. By adding this role to the team, space is created for members of our current team to pursue their design career objectives, increases our capacity to deliver projects as the team continues to grow, and helps retain decades of inhouse drafting and design knowledge.

As a key part of our long-term succession planning: you will work closely alongside our senior technologist to build the deep cross discipline CAD knowledge that keeps our water / wastewater, building mechanical, structural and electrical teams running smoothly – with a clear, supported path to take on more of that coordination role over time.

Responsibilities:

Produce and maintain 2D drafting deliverables primarily in the process mechanical space but also support building mechanical, structural, and electrical disciplines on an ad hoc basis.
Learn and grow in the Autodesk Plant 3D environment such that you are eventually capable of producing Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, and equipment layouts for process mechanical designs.
- This role is more than just drafting and addressing redline markups – the candidate would be expected to grow to perform basic design work related to drafting including basic equipment selection and developing / refining layouts and configurations to account for access, maintenance, other discipline requirements, etc.
- An important part of this role is to provide suggestions and positively challenge assumptions from others working on the project.
- The intent is that in the five-to-ten-year window, the successful candidate will take a leading role in the provision of water / wastewater CAD deliverables for projects.
- Push and increase the integration of Plant 3D in normal workflows including the use of scripts and artificial intelligence.
Apply established company CAD standards consistently and working closely with senior staff with reviewing and updating standards as require.
Build a working knowledge of Revit to provide drafting support to the building mechanical and assist the buildings and structures teams during busy periods, specifically with sheet creation and the extraction of 2D drawings from a Revit model.
Complete CAD coordination responsibilities which will initially include:
- Initial coordination of drawing numbering, sheet format, layers, title blocks, exchange files, etc.
- Coordinate the compilation and authentication of smaller drawing packages across multiple disciplines.
Eventually undertake a CAD coordination role on larger multi discipline projects that would include additional BIM coordination tasks such as federating Revit, Plant 3D, and Civil 3D models, maintaining model alignment, ongoing model coordination, publishing model updates, clash detection management, and coordination reviews across disciplines.
Coordinate and provide technical direction to other drafters across multiple disciplines, who work directly with the process team (i.e. building mechanical, civil, structural, electrical and controls).
Assist with laser scanning, specification production, and related field support tasks as needed, which will require some occasional travel outside the Edmonton area.
Work directly with our senior technologist as part of a planned, multi-year knowledge transfer and succession plan.
Communicate information clearly, verbally and in writing, both within and outside the immediate water / wastewater team.

Personal Characteristics:

The successful candidate will be expected to bring the following personal characteristics to the team:

A meticulous mindset, with the ability to perceive pertinent details in objects and drawings.
A methodical approach and consistent attention to quality in your work.
Ability to analyze information and coordinate across multiple disciplines.
Passion for CAD drafting and an interest in growing into broader design and coordination responsibilities over time.
Ability to meet deadlines across multiple concurrent projects.
Safety oriented, with care for the health and safety of yourself and others.
Commitment to continuous improvement.

What We Give Back

ISL believes in continuous development and working as OneISL across multiple provinces to deliver exceptional project results to our clients. We do this by developing our people and will not pigeonhole your career direction. This role starts in drafting, but the door stays open. As you build experience, there is a genuine path toward broader design and project management involvement, similar to the growth we support for other team members. What you can expect from us is:

A structured, mentored transition of knowledge directly from our senior technologist – not a “sink or swim” start.
Opportunities to mentor, be mentored, and cross train across disciplines.
Regular openings to share skills and test and implement new workflows by using the latest software and technology.
Options to participate in multi-disciplinary and BIM driven project delivery.
A gateway to create your own career path which could lead to expanded design responsibilities and possible professional designation (i.e. P.L. (Eng.))
Hybrid work model: three days in the office and two from home.
Employer-paid health, dental and extensive paramedical benefits from your first day.
Life insurance and AD&D options, plus healthcare spending and lifestyle accounts.
Group RRSP with employer matching and competitive annual bonus incentives.
Paid professional development, including conferences and memberships.
Parental leave top-ups, service recognition awards and a 24/7/365 employee and family assistance program.

At ISL your identity is part of our identity. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) speaks to our core values and provides space for our teams to bring their authentic selves to work. ISL believes DEI creates the best outcomes for our clients while sustaining a happy and thriving work environment that allows for career development and opportunities for all staff. ISL is committed to a focused effort on continuous improvement and development of a respectful and safe workplace.

We thank all applicants in advance for their interest in this position. Only those who will be selected for an interview will be contacted.
