J.S. Held is a global consulting firm that combines technical, scientific, financial, and strategic expertise to advise clients seeking to realize value and mitigate risk. Our professionals serve as trusted advisors to organizations facing high stakes matters demanding urgent attention, staunch integrity, proven experience, clear-cut analysis, and an understanding of both tangible and intangible assets.

Job Description

GHL Consultants, a part of J.S. Held (GHL), is a consulting firm specializing in Building Code Consulting, Fire Protection Engineering, and Life Safety services. We provide innovative solutions to address complex building code and fire and life safety challenges for projects across Western Canada. Our portfolio includes residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, and mixed-use developments ranging from small renovations to large, complex facilities.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) to help grow our presence in Alberta. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering building code and fire and life safety consulting services, managing projects, supporting clients, and mentoring junior staff.

The position will initially be hybrid or predominantly remote; however, candidates should expect a gradual transition to greater in-office presence as the team expands, reflecting JS Held’s commitment to the benefits of in-person collaboration, mentorship, and training.

Key Responsibilities

Provide building code, fire and life safety consulting services for a broad range of development projects, including Part 3 and Part 9 buildings under Division B of Local Building Code.
Develop practical code strategies that support project goals while maintaining compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
Review design documents and liaise with project teams to identify risks, opportunities, and code-related considerations throughout design and construction.
Prepare code analysis, approach to code compliance, building code reports, alternative solutions, and other project deliverables.
Build strong working relationships with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and AHJs to support project success from concept through completion.
Manage multiple projects concurrently, including scope, schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client communication.
Participate in design workshops, AHJ meetings, site visits, field reviews, and construction-phase support activities.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members while supporting their professional growth.
Support business development through client relationship management, proposal preparation, industry engagement, and thought leadership initiatives.
Apply sound professional judgment and take ownership of technical recommendations and project deliverables.
Contribute to the continued growth of the companies code consulting practice and reputation for technical excellence.
Participate in business development activities including marketing and/or educational sessions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related discipline.
5–8 years of experience in building code consulting, fire protection engineering, architecture, building science, or a related field.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with registration in Alberta through the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or eligibility for immediate registration, plus registration or eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).
Strong working knowledge of the National Building Code - Alberta Edition, particularly Part 3 and Part 9 requirements.
Experience conducting building code reviews and preparing technical reports, analyses, compliance documentation, alternative solutions, and performance-based code compliance strategies.
Strong knowledge of fire and life safety principles, including occupant safety, exiting, spatial separations, fire-resistance ratings, and fire protection systems.
Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings and apply applicable code requirements to building design.
Experience supporting projects through planning, design, permitting, construction, and occupancy, including site inspections and coordination with AHJs.
Experience collaborating with developers, architects, engineers, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
Demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent projects and client relationships.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and client-facing presentations.
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with a broad range of building types, including Part 3 and Part 9 buildings.
Experience presenting technical code positions to municipalities and regulatory authorities.
Experience with fire engineering analyses, performance-based design, and alternative solutions.
Certified Professional (CP) experience or equivalent municipal approval experience.
Existing relationships within the Alberta development, architectural, engineering, and regulatory communities.

Physical Qualifications:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to travel to project sites and conduct field investigations.
