Original job description
Your impact
At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing. As part of our Water business, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to some of the most complex and impactful water and wastewater infrastructure projects across Canada.
As a Senior Structural Designer, you will play a key role in the planning, design, and delivery of municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, reservoirs, industrial water infrastructure, and related structural systems. Working closely with structural engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary design teams, you will be responsible for developing high-quality BIM and CAD models and construction drawing packages throughout all project phases, from conceptual and preliminary design through detailed design, tendering, and construction support.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise in structural drafting and BIM coordination, along with the ability to independently develop contract drawing packages, mentor junior designers, and ensure compliance with Jacobs' quality standards and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain detailed BIM models and structural design drawings for water and wastewater infrastructure projects using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation and other design tools.
- Prepare structural plans, sections, details, schedules, and construction documentation for concrete, steel, masonry, and equipment-support structures.
- Support projects through all phases including planning, conceptual design, preliminary design, detailed engineering, tendering, and construction.
- Coordinate structural designs with process, civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and architectural disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Independently produce complete contract and construction drawing packages from engineering calculations, sketches, markups, and design criteria.
- Participate in interdisciplinary BIM coordination reviews and clash detection processes.
- Perform quality control reviews, back-checks, and drawing audits to ensure compliance with project requirements and Jacobs drafting standards.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and review support to junior and intermediate designers.
- Assist engineering teams with quantity take-offs, drawing updates, as-built revisions, and construction support activities.
- Support site investigations, field reviews, and construction-phase services as required.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in drafting standards, modeling workflows, and digital delivery practices.
- Diploma or Degree in Civil, Structural, Architectural, or Engineering Technology from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in structural design and drafting, preferably supporting municipal water and wastewater projects.
- Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation and BIM execution processes.
- Demonstrated experience developing detailed structural construction drawings for industrial, municipal, and infrastructure facilities.
- Strong understanding of reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, and foundation systems.
- Experience coordinating structural designs with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Thorough knowledge of drafting standards, drawing production procedures, and quality management processes.
- Ability to interpret engineering calculations and translate design concepts into construction-ready documentation.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
