Original job description

Lead Hand - Utilities & Infrastructure Construction

Edmonton, AB | Full-Time | Year-Round Employment

Build More Than Infrastructure. Build Your Future.

For over 40 years, JATEC has been connecting communities through underground utilities, fibre optic networks, street lighting, and highway sign infrastructure across Canada. The work we do today helps build the communities people live, work, and grow in for generations.

We're looking for an experienced Lead Hand who leads by example, takes pride in quality work, and is committed to helping crews work safely and efficiently. This position is ideal for someone ready to take the next step in their leadership journey while continuing to work alongside a skilled construction team.

If you're looking for the opportunity to mentor others, develop your leadership skills, and contribute to meaningful infrastructure projects, we'd like to hear from you.

What You'll Do

As a Lead Hand, you will support the successful execution of utility and infrastructure construction projects by providing day-to-day direction, coordination, and support to field crews.

Reporting to the Foreman, you'll serve as a key link between leadership and field personnel, helping ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality.

Responsibilities Include:

Leading and supporting a small crew to complete daily project tasks safely and efficiently
Assisting the Foreman with project execution and acting as site leader when required
Coordinating crew activities and helping ensure project goals are achieved
Performing manual labour in support of underground utility installation and infrastructure construction
Assisting tradespeople, including electricians, concrete finishers, boom truck operators, and utility crews
Supporting heavy equipment operators and coordinating activities around equipment and excavation work
Monitoring the quality and productivity of crew activities
Helping maintain equipment, tools, and work areas in safe working condition
Mentoring junior employees, labourers, and apprentices
Supporting subcontractor coordination and daily work planning activities
Ensuring work is completed in accordance with company procedures, project requirements, and safety standards
Performing other duties related to the trade, project, or crew being supervised

The Reality

We're upfront about what this job requires.

Work outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the construction season
Perform physically demanding labour while also providing leadership and direction to crew members
Work 8-10 hour shifts, 5-6 days per week depending on project requirements
Balance production expectations, quality standards, and safety requirements
Step into leadership responsibilities when the Foreman is unavailable
Address field challenges and support crew performance in real time
Lead by example and maintain professionalism under changing site conditions

If you enjoy helping others succeed, solving problems in the field, and being part of a team building essential infrastructure, you'll fit right in.

Why Join JATEC?

Industry-competitive hourly wages
Local work in Edmonton and surrounding area
Return home every day
100% employer-paid extended health benefits
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Construction Season Bonus Program
Group Retirement Savings Plan (GRSP)
Ongoing training and development opportunities
Career advancement opportunities
Annual Boot Allowance
Opportunity to grow into future supervisory and leadership roles
Team-oriented culture built on safety, hard work, and respect

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Strong communication and leadership skills

A strong commitment to safety
Positive leadership and mentorship abilities
Reliability and accountability
Strong communication and teamwork skills
The ability to organize and coordinate daily crew activities
Pride in producing quality work
Professionalism and a solutions-focused approach to field challenges

Overtime opportunities available based on project requirements.

Leave Your Mark.

The infrastructure we build today will serve communities for decades. At JATEC, you'll be part of a team that's building the networks, utilities, and infrastructure that keep communities connected across Canada.

If you're ready to grow your leadership skills, contribute to meaningful projects, and join a company with a 40-year legacy of building communities, we'd like to hear from you.

We thank all applicants for their interest in JATEC. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
