About Jim Peplinski Capital
For over 35 years, Jim Peplinski Capital (JPC) has financed and managed the vehicles and equipment Canadian businesses run on. We're building the modern model of fleet management, one that starts with data as the catalyst for smarter fleets, optimized assets, and more resilient businesses
We are growing, and we are looking for a Data Engineer who likes to build things from scratch, solve hard problems, and get things done. We're a small, senior technology team on an ambitious growth trajectory, and this is our first dedicated data role. You won't inherit a bureaucracy. You'll build the foundation.
About the Role
You will own JPC’s data platform end-to-end: the pipelines that move data, the warehouse where it lives, the shares that deliver it to customers, the governance that keeps it trustworthy, and the analytics layer that makes it useful. Today that means Snowflake and Airbyte at the core, pipelines from our proprietary fleet management platform, third-party fuel/maintenance/telematics providers, and internal systems, with an analytics migration currently underway from Power BI to Superset.
This is a platform-ownership role with an analytics dimension, not a dashboards-only analyst seat. Because the platform is young, you’ll have a genuine voice in technology choices: when we evolve or replace a tool, you’re in that decision, not downstream of it.
We will consider candidates based in Calgary or Greater Toronto Area.
What you’ll do:
- Own the platform. Run Snowflake (warehouses, RBAC, cost management, performance) and Airbyte (connector health, sync reliability, schema changes, incident response) as production systems you’re accountable for.
- Build the pipelines. Land data from our core operational systems and third-party providers into the warehouse, accurately, on schedule, and observably, and deliver the internal integrations between business systems where the warehouse is the right backbone.
- Own customer data shares. Treat them as a product surface with customer trust attached: secure, correct, and isolated per customer.
- Set the governance bar. Classify data (including PII), run access reviews and retention, monitor data quality (freshness, accuracy, anomalies), and set the standard for what counts as a "trusted" dataset. Be the named owner for data questions with customers and vendors.
- Lead analytics enablement. Take Power BI to Superset from migration to steady state (models, dashboards, access, and adoption), while keeping production dashboards running and new pipelines onboarding smoothly for the business.
- Partner broadly. Work directly with Product, Operations, Sales, Finance, and the Executive team; teach teams to self-serve rather than queue behind you.
- Use AI tooling day to day to accelerate analysis, pipeline development, and iteration.
What we’re looking for:
Must have:
- 4+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a data platform role, with real production ownership
- Strong Snowflake experience, including administration, RBAC, and performance and cost tuning
- Expert SQL, with comfort modeling business data for analytics
- Hands-on experience running Airbyte or a comparable ELT tool (Fivetran, Meltano) in production
- BI platform experience (i.e., Tableau or Superset) with an understanding of semantic modeling, not just chart-building
- Practical data governance experience, including classification, access control, and retention
- Working fluency with Jira and GitHub – our data work is versioned, reviewed, and planned like the rest of our engineering
- Clear communication with non-technical stakeholders, including the Executive team and customers directly
- A track record of owning and delivering projects end-to-end
- A collaborative, energetic communicator who works well within a close-knit team
Nice to have:
- Experience with commercial credit or lending analytics, ideally from automotive or financial services background
- dbt or similar transformation frameworks
- Direct experience with Snowflake data shares is a significant asset
- Python for pipeline glue and automation
- Experience integrating AI tools into your day-to-day workflow
Why you’ll love it at JPC:
- Help shape the future of how commercial fleets are financed and optimized by leading a critical part of our customer experience
- Green-field ownership: the platform and standards are yours to shape
- A genuine voice in technology choices as the stack evolves
- A small team where your work is visible to leadership and customers
- Competitive compensation, performance bonus, comprehensive benefits, and other employer supported benefits from day one
Employment type:
- New, Permanent Full-Time
- Hybrid – based out of either our Calgary, AB or Mississauga, ON office:
- Calgary office: 212 Meridian Rd NE Calgary, AB T2A 2N6
- Mississauga office: 2425 Matheson Blvd East. Suite 120, Mississauga, ON L4W 5K4
