JMC HR Consulting is pleased to partner with Shean Co-op to recruit a General Manager to lead the organization into its next chapter of growth and community impact.

Located in Inverness, Nova Scotia, Shean Co-op has proudly served the community for nearly 90 years. As a member-owned co-operative with approximately 1,400 active members, Shean Co-op is a vital part of the local economy and community. The organization generates more than $8 million in annual sales, employs approximately 35 team members, and offers a full range of grocery and general merchandise products.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the General Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and performance of the co-operative. This role provides an opportunity to lead a well-established community organization while balancing operational excellence, financial stewardship, employee leadership, and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for all operational aspects of the co-operative.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately 35 employees.
  • Oversee day-to-day retail operations, ensuring a positive customer experience and efficient store performance.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to strengthen operations, grow revenue, and enhance member value.
  • Develop and manage budgets while monitoring financial performance, revenues, and expenses.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and evaluate employees while fostering a positive workplace culture.
  • Build strong working relationships with the Board of Directors and provide regular operational and financial updates.
  • Ensure policies, procedures, and business practices align with organizational goals and co-operative principles.
  • Work collaboratively with community stakeholders, members, suppliers, and service providers.

What We're Looking For

  • Post-secondary education in business, management, commerce, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years of leadership experience in a retail, grocery, or customer-facing environment.
  • Strong business acumen with experience managing budgets, financial performance, and operational priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable working with technology and learning industry-specific software systems.
  • An understanding of the co-operative business model would be considered an asset, although support will be provided for the successful candidate to develop this knowledge.

Why Join Shean Co-op?

This is an opportunity to lead a respected community organization with a strong local presence and a loyal membership base. The successful candidate will play a meaningful role in supporting employees, serving members, and helping shape the future of an organization that has been part of Inverness for generations.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
