Original job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Actuary based in Canada.

Join a fast-growing, technology-driven insurance business transforming how protection products are designed, distributed, and managed worldwide. As an Actuary, you will play a key role in pricing strategy, risk assessment, portfolio performance, and the development of innovative insurance solutions. You will analyze data, monitor loss ratios, and deliver actionable recommendations to improve profitability and ensure long-term portfolio sustainability. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams and external insurance partners, you will help shape products that balance commercial performance with customer needs. This role offers the opportunity to apply advanced actuarial expertise in a dynamic, innovation-focused environment where data and technology drive decision-making. If you are analytical, proactive, and eager to influence strategic outcomes, this position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Accountabilities

  • Pricing and risk management: Apply actuarial pricing methodologies and risk management principles to develop pricing recommendations, evaluate insurance products, and support portfolio optimization.
  • Product development: Contribute to the design, launch, and implementation of new insurance products by developing initial pricing models, underwriting guidelines, and relevant actuarial assumptions.
  • Portfolio monitoring: Conduct scheduled and ad hoc pricing reviews, monitor loss ratios, assess rate adequacy, and evaluate product performance across different insurance portfolios and underwriting partners.
  • Data analysis and modelling: Collaborate with Data, Platform, and Data Science teams to develop analytical models, refine pricing methodologies, and build data-driven insurance solutions.
  • Reporting and dashboards: Develop, maintain, and own dashboards that monitor loss ratios and portfolio performance across different products and market segments, providing actionable insights to support decision-making.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: Work closely with insurance partnerships, product, compliance, analytics, customer operations, and claims teams to improve operational efficiency, manage risks, and support sustainable profitability.
  • External relationship management: Present actuarial findings and portfolio recommendations to insurance partners, underwriters, carriers, and reinsurers, helping strengthen relationships and guide strategic decisions.
  • Continuous improvement: Identify inefficiencies, emerging risks, and opportunities to improve pricing, modelling, reporting, and operational processes.
  • Technical development: Enhance the use of analytical tools, programming languages, and modelling software to support best practices in actuarial analysis and reporting.
  • Cross-functional communication: Translate complex actuarial findings into clear, practical recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Professional qualification: Associate or Fellow qualification as an actuary.
  • Industry experience: At least five years of actuarial experience in property and casualty (P&C) or non-life insurance.
  • Actuarial expertise: Strong knowledge of pricing methodologies, risk assessment, loss ratio analysis, portfolio monitoring, and insurance product development.
  • Technical skills: Strong analytical, mathematical, and quantitative abilities, with advanced proficiency in SQL and Microsoft Excel. Experience with R and/or Python is highly desirable.
  • Data and reporting: Ability to analyze complex datasets, develop pricing and segmentation models, and create dashboards that support portfolio performance monitoring and business decisions.
  • Stakeholder management: Proven ability to build and maintain productive relationships with internal teams and external partners, including underwriters and insurance stakeholders.
  • Communication skills: Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical findings and actuarial recommendations clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Project management: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage projects independently while prioritizing competing deadlines.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment, with the flexibility to respond to changing business priorities and new challenges.
  • Personal qualities: A proactive, curious, and results-oriented mindset, with the confidence to take ownership, challenge existing approaches, and identify innovative solutions.
  • Collaborative approach: An approachable and professional attitude, with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues from actuarial and non-actuarial backgrounds.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation: Annual cash compensation of approximately CAD $115,000–$145,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Flexible work environment: Hybrid working arrangements, with remote work typically on Wednesdays and Thursdays and office attendance on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.
  • Flexible scheduling: Flexibility around start and finish times to support work-life balance.
  • Professional growth: Opportunities to expand actuarial expertise, develop technical skills, and contribute to innovative insurance products and analytical solutions.
  • Collaborative culture: Work alongside curious, driven professionals who value accountability, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and collective success.
  • Meaningful impact: Help modernize the insurance industry through data-driven decision-making, advanced technology, and customer-focused product innovation.
  • Inclusive workplace: Join an organization committed to diversity, inclusion, equal opportunity, and a respectful working environment.
