Original job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Commercial Auto Underwriter based in Canada.

As a Commercial Auto Underwriter, you will manage and grow a portfolio of medium to large, complex commercial automobile risks across regional and national markets. You will combine technical underwriting expertise with strong broker and client relationships to identify, assess, and secure profitable business opportunities. The role offers significant autonomy, with responsibility for new business, renewals, pricing, risk analysis, and portfolio development within delegated authority limits. You will work closely with brokers, agents, clients, claims teams, and sales professionals to deliver thoughtful and commercially sound underwriting decisions. Your expertise will help shape account strategy, strengthen market relationships, and support sustainable portfolio growth. You will also contribute as a subject matter expert while mentoring junior colleagues and sharing underwriting knowledge across the team. This is a permanent opportunity with a hybrid work model and occasional travel for strategic broker, agent, and client meetings.

\nAccountabilities:

Manage and develop a portfolio of complex commercial automobile accounts, including medium to large and bulk-rated fleet risks.
Underwrite new business and renewals within delegated authority limits and established underwriting guidelines.
Assess risks thoroughly, measure exposures, and determine appropriate terms, conditions, and target pricing using available underwriting tools.
Proactively identify and pursue renewal and new business opportunities with key broker partners.
Conduct opportunity assessments with distributors and brokers to identify potential for portfolio growth.
Qualify accounts against underwriting appetite, risk parameters, and business growth objectives.
Develop and execute clear strategies for in-person meetings with brokers, agents, and clients.
Negotiate terms and conditions and close commercially sound, profitable deals.
Identify opportunities to cross-sell additional lines of business and increase product penetration within existing accounts.
Maintain a forward-looking pipeline of target accounts approximately 90–120 days ahead of renewal or effective dates.
Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned key accounts and maintain strong, long-term broker and client relationships.
Document broker and client interactions accurately and update account information and status in internal systems in a timely manner.
Participate in regional sales meetings, strategic planning, and initiatives designed to strengthen market presence.
Promote relevant insurance products and services to expand market share within broker channels.
Act as a subject matter expert on coverage-related matters and provide support on claims and underwriting guideline interpretation.
Mentor and support the training and professional development of junior underwriting team members.

Requirements:

At least 5 years of professional experience as a Commercial Auto Underwriter or in a closely related commercial lines underwriting role.
Strong experience underwriting medium to large commercial automobile accounts, particularly bulk-rated fleet risks.
In-depth understanding of commercial auto products and regional and national Canadian markets.
Proven ability to analyze complex automobile exposures and make sound underwriting decisions with limited supervision.
Strong broker and client relationship management skills, with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a professional network.
Experience managing both new business and renewal portfolios while identifying opportunities for profitable growth.
Strong negotiation, communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
Ability to assess risk, calculate target pricing, evaluate exposures, and apply underwriting guidelines effectively.
Strong commercial awareness and ability to balance underwriting discipline with business development objectives.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage a forward-looking account pipeline.
Ability to work independently within delegated authority while collaborating effectively with sales, claims, and other internal teams.
Proven ability to mentor junior professionals and contribute subject-matter expertise to the wider team.
CIP designation is required.
Canadian residency is required, with preference for candidates located in or near Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, or Toronto.
Willingness to travel occasionally for broker, agent, and client meetings.
