The Manager establishes and improves practical systems to identify, assess and control EHS risks; ensures compliance with applicable Canadian requirements and Johnson & Johnson standards; and partners with leaders and employees to strengthen EHS performance and culture.
Key Responsibilities
EHS Leadership and Governance
- Serve as the primary EHS leader for assigned Canadian operations, aligning local priorities with business objectives, regulatory obligations and enterprise EHS standards.
- Manage, coach and develop direct reports by setting clear expectations, providing timely feedback, supporting performance and development, and ensuring effective delivery of EHS priorities.
- Develop and maintain an integrated EHS management system, annual objectives, compliance calendar, dashboards and action plans; monitor implementation, effectiveness and timely closure.
- Advise leaders on complex EHS matters, emerging risks and regulatory changes, and recommend clear, practical courses of action.
- Lead or support Joint Health and Safety Committees, sustainability teams and other EHS governance forums; coach members and strengthen employee participation.
- Implement consistent processes to identify, assess and control risks across offices, warehouse operations, remote work and field activities, including ergonomics, occupational health, medical surveillance, general safety, environmental compliance and contractor or construction work.
- Manage the SAFE FLEET program and policy implementation for field sales and other fleet drivers, including governance, risk reduction, incident follow-up, performance monitoring and stakeholder coordination.
- Manage relationships and day-to-day interactions with third-party fleet and SAFE FLEET vendors supporting the country, including performance oversight, issue resolution, service delivery and alignment with business and program requirements.
- Oversee dangerous goods transportation requirements and related procedures, training, documentation and compliance assurance.
- Maintain hazard communication and chemical-management programs, including Safety Data Sheets, chemical inventories, WHMIS requirements and associated training.
- Maintain emergency preparedness and response programs, permit-to-work controls and change-management processes to prevent adverse safety or environmental impacts.
- Ensure applicable WSIB obligations and federal, provincial and local reporting requirements are understood and fulfilled.
- Plan and conduct inspections, Gemba walks, audits and program reviews with cross-functional teams to evaluate compliance, identify weak signals and prioritize improvement opportunities.
- Lead or support incident investigations, regulatory notifications and root-cause analysis; verify that corrective and preventive actions are completed and effective.
- Prepare audit reports and corrective action plans, and collaborate with accountable leaders to resolve findings within committed timelines.
- Analyze EHS trends and performance data; provide monthly, quarterly and annual metrics, dashboards and management reports.
- Promote a proactive EHS culture through visible leadership, employee engagement, targeted campaigns and continuous-improvement methods.
- Develop, deliver and evaluate instructor-led, virtual and awareness-based EHS training for employees, leaders, contractors and other relevant audiences.
- Maintain a role-based training matrix covering regulatory and company requirements, completion tracking, reporting and refresher needs.
- Partner with business leaders, Facilities, Human Resources, Occupational Health, Security, Fleet, Supply Chain and other functions to integrate EHS requirements into operational decisions and projects.
- Interface professionally with regulatory authorities, inspectors, external service providers and other stakeholders.
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, occupational health and safety, environmental management or a related discipline.
- Preferred: Advanced degree in a related discipline.
- Minimum of eight years of progressive EHS experience, including responsibility for building, implementing and sustaining EHS programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian EHS requirements, including occupational health and safety, workers’ compensation, WHMIS and environmental obligations.
- Experience identifying, evaluating and controlling risks in office, warehouse, field, fleet, contractor or construction environments.
- Working knowledge of EHS management systems, audit practices, ISO standards and contemporary safety-culture principles.
- Ability to interpret complex requirements, distinguish material risk, make sound decisions and translate findings into practical actions.
- Strong project-management, organizational, analytical and record-keeping capabilities, with attention to deadlines and sustained execution.
- Excellent written, verbal, facilitation and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex information clearly to varied audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority, challenge assumptions, recognize weak signals and intervene appropriately.
- Proficiency with common digital tools used for reporting, data analysis, training and program administration.
- EHS experience in a highly regulated industry such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, aerospace, automotive or defence.
- Professional certification such as CRSP, CSP, CIH, P.Eng. or a comparable designation.
- Experience authoring and deploying regional policies, procedures and programs across multiple locations or business groups.
- Experience leading employee campaigns, digital initiatives or data-driven continuous-improvement work.
