About e-Zinc

e-Zinc is an energy storage venture based in Toronto with a breakthrough technology poised to disrupt the market. As the global energy grid moves to higher levels of penetration of renewable energy, there is a surging need for affordable, flexible, long-duration energy storage. e-Zinc is uniquely positioned to meet this demand as the first company in the world to “metalize” electricity.

Backed by over CAD $80 million in funding from leading global strategic and financial investors - such as Toyota Ventures, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Eni, Evok Innovations, and BDC - e-Zinc has garnered international recognition for its proprietary technology and visionary roadmap. Highlights include:

Named to the Global Cleantech 100 for four consecutive years (2022–2025)
$1M Grand Prize winner of the Impact Canada Charging the Future Challenge
Awarded a $1.6M grant from Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada
Secured over $12M in funding across three projects from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC)
Recipient of a USD $1.3M grant from the California Energy Commission

As e-Zinc moves toward commercialization, e-Zinc is expanding its team to bring our transformative technology to market and support the future of renewable energy.

Opportunity

e-Zinc is seeking an experienced and talented Engineer, Embedded Software to join our Product team and play a key role in developing the embedded software that runs our proprietary zinc-air battery technology. This is a highly hands-on engineering role where you will design, develop, and implement embedded software from the ground up, helping bring our next-generation energy storage systems from concept to reality.

Working closely with electrical, mechanical, firmware, and mechatronics engineers, you will translate complex technical requirements into reliable, high-performance software that controls and optimizes battery operation.

We're looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced product development environment - someone who enjoys building software from scratch, iterating quickly based on testing and team feedback, and adapting to evolving product requirements. The ideal candidate is comfortable navigating ambiguity, solving complex technical challenges, and collaborating across disciplines to deliver robust, production-ready solutions.

This is a unique opportunity to help establish the foundation for software development excellence at e-Zinc while making a direct impact on the commercialization of innovative long-duration energy storage technology.

Position Scope and Responsibilities

Design, develop, and test embedded firmware that controls the operation of zinc-air battery systems (charge/discharge cycles, safety mechanisms, diagnostics, and more).
Write well-structured and documented code for microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, TI MSPM0, or similar).
Implement control flows, fault detection and response, thermal management for battery pack control.
Integrate sensors, actuators, and power electronics through analog, digital, and other communications interfaces.
Contribute to system-level architecture decisions and participate in design reviews.
Collaborate with electrical and battery teams to translate system requirements into reliable code.
Analyze system logs, perform debugging, and propose firmware improvements based on collected data.
Support prototype builds and field deployments by ensuring stable firmware integration.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, software engineering, or related field.
5+ years of experience in software development for BESS, automotive, or other industrial controls applications.
Experience in structuring and writing real-time embedded applications for microcontrollers using C.
Experience implementing various industrial communications protocols (e.g. CAN, CAN FD, MODBUS TCP) in embedded software.
Experience with embedded bootloaders or other methods of over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates.
Comfortable reading and interpreting schematics, datasheets, and hardware manuals.
Documentation: UML, writing software documentation, Doxygen, version control.
Comfortable using equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers to debug hardware interfaces.
Understanding of control systems (PID, fuzzy logic, etc.), and data acquisition is an asset.
Experience writing software for battery management systems (BMS), energy storage, or power electronics is an asset.

At e-Zinc, how we work matters just as much as what we build. The qualities below reflect how our team turns our core values into action every day.

Safety: You prioritize safety in everything you do and understand the deep responsibility we have to our people, our customers, and our planet.

Truth: You are honest, transparent, and authentic - with yourself, your teammates, and our customers.

Results: You approach challenges with curiosity and creativity, troubleshoot thoughtfully, and focus on delivering meaningful outcomes.

Mastery: You are committed to building domain expertise, bring a strong work ethic, and continuously invest in your own growth and improvement.

Value: You act responsibly with time, financial resources, and effort, always aiming to create the greatest impact and long-term value.

Why Join e-Zinc?

Compensation & Total Rewards:

The expected annual salary range for this role is $110,000– $130,000. For contract roles, it will be comverted into hourly. Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and overall fit for the position.

Competitive compensation
Comprehensive Employer-paid benefits
Retirement savings plans with employer contributions
Equity grants and opportunity for company ownership
Paid vacation time to refresh, plus additional paid time off for special events such as birthdays or religious holidays
