Main Responsibilities
The purpose of the
Financial Analyst position is to support the Finance and Business Services department by executing financial and administrative functions required for internal management, external stakeholders, and Ministry reporting. The role supports financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, efficient budget execution, and clear operational data presentation to guide board decision-making.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Audit and reconcile financial reports, transactions, remittances, and capital financing records to ensure compliance with relevant government and accounting standards.
- Prepare, verify, and post journal entries in accordance with public sector accounting standards, resolving general ledger discrepancies across board departments.
- Maintain and monitor annual department, program and school budgets to ensure efficient resource allocation and timely discrepancy resolution.
- Perform financial and operational analysis to generate forecasts for departments, board programs and schools, supporting planning and decision-making.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations by reviewing and verifying bank statements against accounting records, investigating and resolving discrepancies, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Conduct special audits as required, including reviewing financial records and transactions to identify discrepancies, compliance, and provide recommendations as appropriate.
- Review and verify regional transportation ridership data bi-annually to maintain agreement compliance and ensure accurate cost-sharing between partner organizations
- Record and audit tax revenue schedules and collaborate with municipal authorities to process levies, adjustments, and deferrals to ensure full revenue collection.
- Support year-end account reconciliations and act as a point of contact for internal and external auditors by preparing supporting documentation.
- Input student enrollment, attendance, and regulatory schedule data into financial databases, verifying revenue charges with relevant internal departments.
- Support the project planning, system testing, and user onboarding for new financial software implementations, upgrades, and process improvements.
- Develop and deliver ongoing training to Board staff to ensure proficiency in core financial systems, policies, and reporting workflows.
- Conduct special financial analysis projects in collaboration with departmental staff to optimize costs and preserve financial integrity.

Education & Experience Qualifications
- Completed four (4) year post-secondary degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting, Financial Management, or related field.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or active enrolment the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP) pursuing the CPA designation is preferred.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a related accounting or finance field, experience in a public sector environment is preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of Ontario school board accounting concepts and educational funding structures is considered an asset.

Leadership/Supervision
- Responsible for the direct supervision of Business Operations Clerk position(s).
