Generator Technician – Diesel & Natural Gas Power Systems

You will work with industrial and commercial generator systems rather than performing repetitive shop work. The position combines preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, commissioning and customer-site service.
What Would You Be Doing?
- Preventive maintenance: Inspecting and servicing diesel and natural-gas generator sets to identify problems before they cause a failure. This may include engine, fuel, cooling, starting, charging, electrical and control-system checks.
- Troubleshooting and repairs: Diagnosing mechanical, electrical and controls-related problems using wiring diagrams, meters, diagnostic tools, controller alarms and equipment history. You will repair or replace defective components and confirm that the generator is operating properly.
- Controls and ATS work: Using generator controllers and HMIs to review alarms, operating conditions and system faults. You may also inspect and troubleshoot automatic transfer switches and related electrical equipment.
- Commissioning and testing: Supporting generator startups and confirming that newly installed or serviced systems operate safely and as intended. This may include verifying connections and settings, testing alarms and shutdowns, confirming ATS operation, conducting load-bank or functional testing and documenting the results.
- This is not intended to be a PLC-programming or controls-engineering position. The emphasis is on understanding the equipment, using its controls to diagnose problems and confirming reliable operation.
- Customer-site service: Travelling to industrial and commercial customer locations, communicating professionally with site representatives and explaining findings, completed work and recommended repairs.
- Documentation: Completing service reports, maintenance checklists, timesheets, expense records and other required field documentation accurately and promptly.
What Experience Is Most Important?
We are interested in technicians who can demonstrate:
- Hands-on experience servicing diesel and/or natural-gas generator sets;
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability;
- Experience diagnosing engine, fuel, cooling, starting and charging-system problems;
- Familiarity with alternators, sensors, wiring and generator control systems;
- Ability to read electrical schematics and use meters and diagnostic equipment;
- Experience navigating generator controllers or HMIs and interpreting alarms;
- Exposure to ATS equipment, load-bank testing, startup or commissioning;
- Experience working independently at customer sites;
- Clear spoken and written English for customer communication and service documentation; and
- A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel as required.
A background as an industrial electrician, heavy-duty mechanic, millwright or similarly qualified technician may be valuable. However, practical generator-service experience and the ability to diagnose complete electromechanical systems are more important than any single job title.
Complementary Experience
The following would be valuable but should not prevent a strong Generator Technician from applying:
- Advanced switchgear, synchronization or paralleling systems;
- Experience with specific generator, engine or controller manufacturers;
- Large-scale or multi-unit commissioning;
- Data-centre or mission-critical power systems;
- Emissions and after-treatment systems;
- Microgrids, battery storage or hybrid-energy systems; and
- PLC or SCADA exposure.
Travel and Location
This is a field-service position involving regular travel to customer locations. Work is expected to include the Lower Mainland and other areas of British Columbia, with the potential for assignments elsewhere in Canada or the United States.
The company’s primary location is in the Greater Vancouver area. Qualified candidates elsewhere in British Columbia may also be considered depending on their experience, availability to travel and ability to report to the main facility when required.
