About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Contract Credit Specialist to manage daily counterparty credit exposures and business relationships within established Credit Policy, Standards, Procedures, and risk appetite guidelines.
The successful candidate will bring strong financial and technical analytical skills, sound business judgment, and the ability to build effective relationships with external counterparties and internal stakeholders. This role will independently complete complex credit reviews, make timely recommendations on counterparty credit limits, ratings, and terms, and maintain ownership of credit scoring models.
The Contract Credit Specialist will also support contract and collateral negotiations, apply appropriate credit risk mitigation strategies, and monitor and report exposures across various ETRM systems and credit tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor daily credit exposures against approved credit limits and tenors across all business segments.
- Ensure compliance with Credit Policy, Standards, Procedures, and established risk controls.
- Conduct ongoing credit analysis using internal and external market intelligence to identify risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Complete complex credit reviews for a diverse portfolio of counterparties.
- Provide credit recommendations for approval in accordance with the applicable Delegation of Authority.
- Contribute to daily, monthly, and quarterly credit reporting and portfolio monitoring activities.
- Own, maintain, and enhance quantitative credit scoring models used to support portfolio benchmarking analysis.
- Support contract and collateral negotiations while actively monitoring counterparty and portfolio exposures.
- Act as a key liaison to the business for new counterparty requests and credit-related matters.
- Provide guidance on deal structures and credit terms while balancing commercial objectives and risk requirements.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, external counterparties, and other members of the credit team.
- Apply knowledge of commodity trading markets, including physical and financial markets, to assess counterparty risk.
- Use ETRM systems and technical tools such as Power BI, Power Automate, and Databricks to support data analysis, reporting, and process automation.
- Identify opportunities to improve credit processes, reporting, controls, and analytical tools.
Qualifications
- Legally authorized to work in Canada.
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant credit experience in the energy industry.
- Strong understanding of both physical and financial commodity markets.
- Demonstrated experience conducting complex credit reviews and assessing counterparty risk.
- Experience making credit recommendations related to limits, ratings, terms, and risk mitigation.
- Strong knowledge of credit policies, procedures, controls, and Delegation of Authority frameworks.
- Experience monitoring credit exposure and producing portfolio or management reporting.
- Strong financial analysis, quantitative analysis, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with business, legal, commercial, treasury, and credit stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal communication, relationship management, and negotiation skills.
- Experience with ETRM systems and credit risk tools.
- Proficiency with Power BI, Power Automate, Databricks, or comparable data and automation tools.
- CFA designation is considered an asset.
