About the Role
Our client, a leading Canadian financial institution, is seeking an AML Financial Crime Risk Investigative Analyst to join its Global Anti-Money Laundering (GAML) team. This is a backfill opportunity supporting the Detection Team, which serves as a critical line of defence in identifying and mitigating financial crime risk.
The successful candidate will review branch escalations and transaction-monitoring alerts, conduct detailed transaction analysis, assess risk, and determine whether cases can be closed or require escalation for further investigation and Suspicious Transaction Reporting (STR) review.
This role is ideal for candidates with AML operations, financial crime, investigations, compliance, or risk analysis experience who enjoy investigative work and analyzing complex transactional activity.
What You'll Be Doing
- Review branch-submitted Unusual Transaction Reports (UTRs) and transaction-monitoring alerts.
- Conduct detailed transaction analysis to identify unusual patterns, trends, and potential suspicious activity.
- Assess whether risks have been mitigated or require escalation for further investigation.
- Escalate higher-risk cases to the CORE team for potential STR filing and additional review.
- Investigate AML, sanctions, terrorist financing, and other financial crime-related concerns.
- Maintain high levels of accuracy while managing productivity expectations.
- Work through alerts and escalations generated from various monitoring scenarios.
- Document findings and support compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
- Identify operational improvements and contribute to process efficiencies.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including branches, AML teams, and investigative partners.
Team Environment
The Detection Team acts as a key layer within the AML program, reviewing alerts and escalations received from branches and monitoring systems. The team determines whether risk has been sufficiently mitigated or if cases should be escalated to CORE for further review and regulatory reporting.
Training & Onboarding
Successful candidates will receive a comprehensive onboarding program, including:
- Approximately 1 month of classroom training
- 2-3 months of guided hands-on case work
- Ongoing case reviews and feedback through the DSLR program
- Progressive transition to independent case management
This role is well suited for candidates looking to further develop their AML investigative and transaction-analysis expertise within a large financial institution.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of Risk Analyst, AML Analyst, Financial Crime, Compliance, or Investigative experience
- Fundamental knowledge of AML operations, standards, procedures, laws, regulations, and compliance requirements
- Strong transaction analysis and risk assessment experience
- Experience reviewing alerts, investigations, or suspicious activity
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to prioritize workload and meet daily productivity targets
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- High attention to detail and strong analytical thinking
- Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion
Preferred Qualifications
- Banking or financial services industry experience
- AML investigations or financial crime operations experience
- Exposure to FINTRAC initiatives such as Project Chameleon or Project Athena
- CAMS (Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist) certification
- ACFCS certification
- Experience working within large enterprise AML environments
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience conducting transaction analysis, investigating suspicious activity, and assessing financial crime risks. Candidates who can interpret transactional patterns, make risk-based decisions, and confidently determine when cases should be escalated will be highly successful in this role.
Experience within AML Operations, Fraud, Compliance, Financial Crime, KYC, EDD, or Transaction Monitoring environments is highly desirable.
Performance Expectations
- Manage and review approximately 10 cases/alerts per day once fully trained
- Meet service level agreements (SLAs) and productivity targets
- Ensure accuracy and quality of investigative findings
- Demonstrate sound judgment when assessing and escalating risk
