About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Control Testing Reviewer / Operational Risk Assurance Professional for a 6-month contract with a leading financial institution in downtown Toronto.
This role focuses on the independent review and effective challenge of control testing activities. You will partner with first- and second-line stakeholders to evaluate whether testing is appropriately designed, executed, evidenced, and reported, ensuring control weaknesses are accurately identified and addressed.
Key Responsibilities
- Independent Review & Challenge: Provide second-line oversight of control testing activities, assessing scope, methodology, sample selection, procedures, evidence, and conclusions.
- Quality Assurance: Challenge the quality and consistency of control effectiveness ratings, identified deficiencies, and management responses against underlying risks and business context.
- Insight & Reporting: Identify recurring themes, systemic control weaknesses, concentration risks, and emerging issues; deliver concise, decision-useful insights to senior management and risk committees.
- Remediation Oversight: Provide credible challenge on remediation plans and verify whether closure evidence is sufficient.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with business, control, and enterprise stakeholders to promote consistent application of control testing requirements while maintaining independent second-line oversight.
Candidate Profile
Must-Have Qualifications:
- 5–7 years of experience in Operational Risk, Audit, Compliance, Controls, or a related second-line oversight function within a complex financial institution or large consulting firm (e.g., KPMG).
- Undergraduate degree or technical certificate with relevant experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of control design, control effectiveness, testing methodologies, evidence standards, issue identification, and remediation oversight.
- Proven ability to provide credible challenge and influence stakeholders without formal authority.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate detailed testing observations into clear messages for senior leadership.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience within Wholesale Banking or Capital Markets.
- Professional risk, audit, accounting, or related certification (e.g., CPA, CIA, CRISC).
Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail, sound professional judgment, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build collaborative relationships across first- and second-line stakeholders while maintaining strict independence.
