COMPANY OVERVIEW

KITS is a fast-growing, TSX-listed direct-to-consumer retailer of prescription eyewear, serving customers across Canada and the United States. SUMMARY

As Senior Accountant you will own some of the most technically demanding parts of our monthly close: inventory and cost of goods sold across a vertically integrated optical manufacturer, end-to-end accounting for our retail locations, and Canadian/US tax compliance. You will also help prepare the monthly and quarterly consolidation and support the intercompany process. Reporting to the Financial Controller, you will mentor and develop a team of two staff accountants, guiding their daily work and professional growth.

This is a hands-on role, and it is deliberately scoped. Our close runs to a fixed business-day calendar with defined owners and reviewers, so you will know what is yours and when it is due rather than spending your first six months working that out.

We are a fast-paced company that is growing, evolving and scaling quickly, and we are looking for someone who can keep up with that.

The role suits a designated accountant who wants ownership rather than a piece of a process, is comfortable being the person Operations calls about inventory, and would rather fix a broken reconciliation than run it again next month.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Inventory and cost of goods sold

Own monthly inventory and cost of goods sold accounting across our major inventory categories, including lens pucks, consumables, and contact lenses inventory held at third-party warehouses.
Reconcile perpetual inventory to the general ledger, maintain weighted average costing, and prepare the related adjusting entries.
Partner with Operations and our overseas finance team on invoice matching, cost updates, and periodic cycle counts.
Maintain and improve the reporting models that support inventory and cost analysis.

Retail store accounting

Own end-to-end accounting for our retail locations: cash and payment reconciliations, store receivables, sales fees, and merchandise usage.
Complete the monthly store cost of goods sold reconciliation.
Prepare monthly store P&L statements for management review and speak to the variances.

Reporting, consolidation and intercompany

Assist with the preparation of the monthly and quarterly consolidation.
Assist with the preparation of quarterly financial statements and the supporting schedules.
Assist with deferred revenue accounting and the underlying analysis.
Prepare intercompany entries and support the intercompany reconciliation process.
Support quarterly reviews and the annual audit with the working papers you own.

Tax compliance

Prepare and file Canadian tax returns, including GST, PST and QST.
Coordinate with third-party service providers on the filing of US sales tax.

Accruals, analysis and review

Prepare monthly accrual entries, including compensation-related accruals.
Prepare recurring cost and vendor spend analysis used by the leadership team.
Review selected balance sheet reconciliations and working papers prepared by other members of the team.

Beyond the monthly close

Lead a recurring freight cost reconciliation alongside the accounts payable accountant.
Drive cycle count process improvement and strengthen the related internal controls.
Take on additional technical areas and greater ownership as you ramp.
Identify repetitive manual work and automate or streamline it.

WHO YOU ARE

Must-Haves

You're a designated accountant who has already run a close, not just contributed to one, and you're ready to own the full breadth of a growing, multi-entity finance function rather than a single slice of it.

CPA designation, or in the final stages of the CPA program.
5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including full ownership of a month-end close cycle to a fixed deadline.
Demonstrated experience in an inventory-heavy environment: weighted average costing, cost of goods sold reconciliation, and tying a perpetual subledger to the general ledger. Inventory is a significant part of this role.
Experience in a multi-entity, multi-currency group, including preparing or supporting a consolidation.
Working knowledge of IFRS.
Experience with Canadian indirect tax compliance.
Advanced Excel, and genuine comfort with large transactional data sets and multi-source reconciliations.
Strong written and verbal communication: you will work directly with Operations, our overseas team, and the reporting team, not only with Finance.
Thrives in a fast-paced, scaling environment and can keep pace as the business evolves, without losing accuracy or missing a close deadline.
Sound judgement: knows when to make the call and when to escalate.
A process improvement mindset. We would rather you tell us a working paper is wrong than complete it neatly.

Nice-to-Haves

Power BI or similar reporting tools - building and maintaining models, not only consuming reports.
Xero, QuickBooks Online, or comparable cloud finance and AP automation systems.
Retail or direct-to-consumer e-commerce, with multiple payment processors and third-party logistics providers.
Experience in a public company reporting environment.
Love of eyecare products (i.e., glasses, sunglasses, etc.)!

Compensation

The expected annual salary range for this position is $70,700 – $101,000.
