Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Tailings

Toronto or Sudbury, ON

KCB is a multidisciplinary engineering, geoscience, and environmental consulting firm grounded in our values of Passion, Integrity, and Excellence. With teams across North America, South America, Australasia, and Europe, we bring together global technical knowledge, local insight, and a shared commitment to solving complex challenges that matter.

Today's challenges demand more than just technical knowledge; they require collaboration, creativity, and a deep understanding of the communities, industries, and environments that we support. At KCB, our team collaborates across regions and disciplines to bring practical thinking, technical excellence, and diverse perspectives to every project.

We are problem-solvers at heart. Our teams bring passion to complex challenges, integrity to every client relationship and excellence to the solutions we deliver for communities, industries, and future generations.

Guided by our long-term ambition of Globally Connected Excellence and our purpose of Sustaining the Future, we work alongside our clients to deliver lasting solutions that strengthen resilience and benefit future generations.

The Opportunity:

Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd. (KCB) seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mining Environmental Group in either our Sudbury or Toronto office. This role will support and lead geotechnical aspects of mining projects, with a focus on tailings storage facilities (TSFs), mine waste, and water management. Career development can be managed to support personal preferences such as niche, technical design specialists, or project participation in both technical dam engineering scopes and project management, or all-round dam engineering specialists, such as the responsible persons or Engineers of Record.

The position offers a hybrid work arrangement and the opportunity to contribute to complex, large-scale global projects.

This role will give you the opportunity to:

Lead and support the design, construction, operation, and closure of tailings storage facilities
Perform and contribute to risk assessments, dam safety evaluations, and risk-based decision-making
Collaborate with clients, internal teams, and external partners on field programs and engineering solutions
Conduct geotechnical analyses, including slope stability and seepage assessments
Oversee site investigations, laboratory testing, and earthworks activities
Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and staff
Develop and maintain strong client relationships throughout project lifecycles
Utilize industry-standard software and tools for analysis and design
Participate in professional development opportunities, including conferences and training

What we require:

We respect the knowledge and experience you have gained to date and are willing to help you build on it. The Senior Geotechnical Engineer role would require the following qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering (or related discipline)
Eligibility for Professional Engineer (P.Eng) licensure in Canada

10 - 15 years of civil design experience, with five years related to mine waste management projects.
Candidates must have a background in geotechnical design, with a focus on dams, embankments, and slopes.
Demonstrated experience with dam design, slope stability, seepage analysis, and site investigation
Strong understanding of soil and rock mechanics, including laboratory and field testing
Experience working in safety-focused environments with incident reporting requirements
Proven ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams

In addition to the must-have requirements above, you will excel in the role if you have the following:

Experience in seismic analysis of dams and related software packages.

An ability to find creative solutions and know how to present them.
A willingness to mentor others and be mentored.
An ability to build rapport with clients, colleagues, and industry partners.
An ability to apply critical thinking and flexibility in problem solving.

What We Offer

The expected salary range for this position is $110,000 - $160,000 annually. Compensation above this range may be considered for candidates with significant experience or specialized expertise. The actual salary offered is based on an individual assessment of applicable experience, education, and skill level.

Along with continued career development, KCB offers:

Hybrid work opportunities (3 days in office)
Annual performance and salary review
A track record of profitability, leading to above average bonus payouts
Vacation policy that aligns to your experience
Paid overtime, and ten sick days per year
Flexible benefits, including Registered Savings Plan, social, and mental well-being initiatives
Dedication to WEF’s “Four Pillars” of Environment Social Governance framework, Governance, People, Planet and Prosperity

We are a global organization committed developing a respectful workplace founded on the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. We strive to be a workplace where our employees, clients, and the communities in the regions we operate, feel valued and are treated equitable. We respect the uniqueness that makes you, you. We encourage applications from all qualified career seekers, regardless of gender, sex, religion, or nationality.
