Process Engineer – Water & Wastewater Treatment

Location: Surrey, BC

Job Type: Full-Time, On-Site

About Komline Pure Water

Komline Pure Water designs and manufactures custom drinking water and wastewater treatment systems for communities and industrial customers. Our work includes solutions for remote and Indigenous communities and demanding operating environments, helping customers protect water resources and improve access to reliable treatment.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Process Engineer to support the design and delivery of custom water and wastewater treatment systems. Based in Surrey, BC, this role will translate customer water quality requirements, treatment objectives, and operating conditions into practical, reliable process designs.

The Process Engineer will develop treatment approaches, perform engineering calculations, select equipment, and support projects from proposal development through fabrication, commissioning, and performance evaluation. This position works closely with applications, mechanical, electrical, controls, project management, and production teams to deliver integrated systems that meet customer requirements.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Process Design and Equipment Selection

  • Review source water and wastewater characteristics, flow requirements, treated water objectives, and site constraints to establish the design basis.
  • Evaluate treatment alternatives and recommend appropriate combinations of physical, chemical, and biological processes.
  • Develop process calculations, mass balances, hydraulic calculations, and chemical dosing requirements.
  • Prepare process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and equipment specifications.
  • Size and select pumps, tanks, filters, membrane systems, chemical feed equipment, and other treatment components.
  • Consider operability, maintenance access, energy consumption, chemical usage, and residuals management in system designs.
  • Account for remote-site conditions, cold climates, and operator support needs when developing treatment solutions.

Proposal and Project Support

  • Support sales and applications teams with technical evaluations, preliminary designs, equipment budgets, and proposals.
  • Review customer specifications and identify technical requirements, exceptions, and information gaps.
  • Communicate design assumptions, treatment capabilities, and operating requirements to customers and project teams.
  • Coordinate with project management to maintain engineering schedules and address changes in project scope.
  • Review vendor quotations, equipment submittals, and technical documentation for alignment with process requirements.

System Integration and Fabrication Support

  • Coordinate process requirements with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and controls teams.
  • Develop process control descriptions, operating sequences, instrument requirements, and alarm and interlock criteria.
  • Work with production teams to resolve technical questions during skid assembly, piping installation, and system fabrication.
  • Participate in design reviews to improve safety, constructability, reliability, and ease of operation.
  • Support preparation of operating manuals, process descriptions, and commissioning procedures.

Testing, Commissioning, and Optimization

  • Develop and support laboratory, pilot, and system performance testing plans.
  • Analyze test results and operating data to validate treatment selections and identify improvements.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, site commissioning, and treatment system startup.
  • Troubleshoot process performance issues and recommend adjustments to operating conditions, chemical dosing, or equipment settings.
  • Assist with customer and operator training on treatment processes and system operation.
  • Incorporate commissioning results and field feedback into future designs and standard practices.

Quality and Technical Documentation

  • Maintain clear records of calculations, design decisions, equipment selections, and revisions.
  • Develop designs that address applicable drinking water, wastewater, environmental, and project-specific requirements.
  • Participate in technical reviews and follow established engineering quality procedures.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and qualified reviewers on design verification and approvals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, environmental, civil, mechanical, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC, or eligibility to obtain registration before assuming the position.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience in water or wastewater process design, treatment equipment applications, or system commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of drinking water or wastewater treatment processes, including filtration, membrane treatment, chemical dosing, or disinfection.
  • Experience preparing process calculations, equipment sizing, process flow diagrams, and P&IDs.
  • Ability to interpret water quality data, customer specifications, and technical equipment information.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, technical writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and collaborate with engineering, production, and customer-facing teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and relevant engineering design or analysis tools.
  • Ability to work on-site in Surrey and travel to customer locations, including remote sites, as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing packaged, skid-mounted, modular, or containerized treatment systems.
  • Knowledge of reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, media filtration, ion exchange, UV disinfection, or biological wastewater treatment.
  • Experience supporting municipal, Indigenous community, remote-site, or industrial treatment projects.
  • Familiarity with Canadian and British Columbia drinking water and wastewater requirements.
  • Experience with pilot testing, commissioning, operator training, and performance troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation, automated treatment controls, and process control strategies.
  • Experience working directly with equipment fabrication and production teams.

Equal Opportunity Statement
