Original job description

Overview

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

Please note that you are limited to one application during the recruitment period as we ask you to think ahead of what office and service line you are most interested in. This position is for a 4-month intern / co-op term.

Overview

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can develop your skills alongside experienced professionals, contribute to meaningful work, and build a foundation for your career within one of Canada’s leading professional services firms.

KPMG in Canada is growing a team of AI Builders who work with our business teams to explore how AI can improve the way we work. As an AI Builder Intern/Co-op, you will work alongside experienced builders, engineers, and business professionals to turn emerging AI capabilities into prototypes for real business challenges. You will contribute your own ideas, test your work with users, and share it with teams across the firm, gaining firsthand experience in how a major organization puts AI into practice.

What You Will Do

Build and test AI agents, automations, demos, and other prototypes using KPMG’s approved tools, with guidance from experienced team members.
Work with internal teams to understand their workflows, identify problems, and explore where AI could help.
Help define what a prototype should do, test whether it works as intended, and improve it based on feedback.
Assist with evaluations, documentation, and integrations with approved tools and data sources.
Explore how Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects AI tools to systems and data, and help test MCP-based workflows where appropriate.
Create reusable components, build notes, and demonstrations that help other teams learn from your work.
Participate in AI Lab activities and share your findings with the broader builder community.
Learn how security, privacy, governance, and human oversight shape AI solutions in a regulated enterprise.

Your work will focus primarily on experimentation and prototyping. You may also support more mature solutions alongside engineering and internal transformation teams.

What You Bring To The Role

We welcome students from engineering, computer science, business, design, data science, and related fields, as well as those who have developed technical skills through independent projects.

You are enrolled in a post-secondary program and are eligible for an internship or co-op work term.
You have built something you can discuss, whether through a personal project, a hackathon, previous employment, volunteer work, or coursework. It could be an app, automation, workflow, AI experiment, or other working prototype.
You have a working understanding of AI agents, reusable skills, and Model Context Protocol (MCP).
You enjoy learning new tools and can explain how you approached a problem, tested an idea, and responded to what you learned.
You are interested in how people work and how technology can improve a real process.
You communicate clearly, collaborate well, and are comfortable asking questions when a problem is unclear.
You are curious about agentic AI and thoughtful about its limitations, risks, and appropriate use.

Experience building with AI development tools, APIs, low-code platforms, or enterprise systems is an asset, but you do not need experience with all of them.

Where And How You’ll Work

You will be based in KPMG’s AI Lab in Toronto. This is a hybrid role with a strong in-person component. You will be expected to work from the Toronto office three to five days per week, depending on lab activities, team needs, and your projects.

You will work with internal teams across the firm, gaining exposure to business challenges, professional disciplines, and enterprise AI applications that extend beyond the classroom.

What’s In It For You

Hands-on experience building and testing AI prototypes for real internal use cases.
Direct mentorship from experienced builders, engineers, and business professionals, helping you develop both technical depth and professional judgment.
Exposure to complex enterprise workflows and the practical considerations involved in adopting AI responsibly.
Opportunities to demonstrate your work, learn from feedback, and contribute reusable ideas and components.
Access to approved AI models, frameworks, and tools through KPMG’s secure AI Lab environment.

How To Apply

Please submit

Your resume.
One project you’ve built and are proud of (required, please include on your cover letter). Briefly describe what you built, your contribution, and what you learned. The project does not need to use AI.
Your GitHub profile (required, please include on either resume or cover letter)
A link to the project (optional). This could be a demo, video, or write-up.

We’re interested in how you approach a problem and bring an idea to life. If your project is private or cannot be shared, you can still describe it in your application.

What does the recruitment process look like?

Step 1 Apply. Submit the materials listed above.

Step 2 Interview and practical discussion. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to discuss their project or complete a scoped exercise that shows how they approach a problem. Instructions and expectations will be shared in advance.

Step 3 Hiring decision. Final candidates will be assessed on their skills, potential, collaboration, and approach to responsible AI use.

KPMG Ontario Region Pay Range Information

The expected base salary range for this position is $50,000 to $63,000 and may be eligible for bonus awards. The determination of an applicant’s base salary within this range is based on the individual’s location, skills & competencies, and unique qualifications. In addition, KPMG offers a comprehensive and competitive Total Rewards program.

Our Values, The KPMG Way

Integrity, we do what is right | Excellence, we never stop learning and improving | Courage, we think and act boldly | Together, we respect each other and draw strength from our differences | For Better, we do what matters

KPMG in Canada is a proud equal opportunities employer and we are committed to creating a respectful, inclusive and barrier-free workplace that allows all of our people to reach their full potential. A diverse workforce is key to our success and we believe in bringing your whole self to work. We welcome all qualified candidates to apply and hope you will choose KPMG in Canada as your employer of choice.

Adjustments and accommodations throughout the recruitment process

At KPMG, we are committed to fostering an inclusive recruitment process where all candidates can be themselves and excel. We aim to provide a positive experience and are prepared to offer adjustments or accommodations to help you perform at your best. Adjustments (informal requests), such as extra preparation time or the option for micro breaks during interviews, and accommodations (formal requests), such as accessible communication supports or technology aids, are tailored to individual needs and role requirements. You will have an opportunity to request an adjustment or accommodation at any point throughout the recruitment process. If you require support, please contact KPMG’s Employee Relations Service team by calling 1-888-466-4778.

AI Usage

We embrace the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the candidate experience and streamline our recruitment processes. AI tools may help with organizing applications or surfacing relevant qualifications. However, no hiring decisions are made using AI. Every hiring decision is made by our hiring managers and recruitment professionals, who are equipped with training that empowers them to use these tools responsibly. AI technologies used in our recruitment process undergo detailed risk assessments, including security and privacy requirements, that align with KPMG’s Trusted AI framework.

We believe technology should empower human judgment, not replace it. It’s one of the many ways we’re delivering on our vision of being a technology-first, people-driven firm.
