Original job description

Our Values - SPARK

Our company values are at the core of everything we do. How we do our work is equally important as what we do for work. We hire people who align with these values. We call them our SPARK values.

Kraun Electric is an electrical contractor serving industrial, commercial, institutional and residential clients. We combine high-quality electrical work with a customer-first, solution-oriented approach - designing and implementing solutions while delivering a consistently positive client experience.

The Junior Software Developer supports Kraun's 5Zeros software initiative by building, improving, testing, and documenting the internal applications that power our operations. This role works directly with the CEO/product owner, senior technical advisors, and our office, field, project, service, and leadership teams to translate real operational problems into practical, reliable software tools. Senior technical support is provided for production security, cloud architecture, and authentication decisions, with responsibility growing as the platform matures.

At Kraun Electric, we drive for results, take pride in our professionalism, and value the people on our team. We are good at what we do, and who we work alongside each day is critically important. We aim to provide a work environment where individuals feel safe, know they matter, and can grow professionally.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Build and improve internal web applications, dashboards, forms, reports, and workflow tools.
  • Design clean, usable interfaces for office, field, project, service, and leadership users.
  • Translate business requirements into small, well-defined development tasks and working features.
  • Fix bugs and improve the functionality and usability of existing applications.
  • Support integrations between internal systems and data sources, as directed.
  • Assist with database queries, data cleanup, and reporting logic.
  • Develop internal automation tools that reduce manual work and improve visibility.
  • Manage code through GitHub branches, pull requests, and code review processes.
  • Test new features prior to release and confirm functionality with end users.
  • Maintain documentation for code, setup, workflows, and system behaviour.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly, reviewing and validating all generated code.
  • Support special projects and other technical duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • 0 to 2 years of software development experience, including internship, co-op, academic, or personal projects; experience building tools used by real users is an asset.
  • Basic to intermediate experience with JavaScript and/or TypeScript and a modern web framework such as React, Next.js, Vue, Svelte, or Angular.
  • Working knowledge of backend development, APIs, SQL, and database concepts.
  • Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching, pull requests, and code review.
  • Ability to read, understand, and improve existing code, and to verify the accuracy of AI-assisted coding output.
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and willingness to ask questions rather than guess.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Vercel, Render, Supabase, or Firebase.
  • Exposure to authentication, user permissions, and security basics, including environment variables, secrets, user roles, and access control.
  • Experience with internal tools, dashboards, ERP integrations, workflow applications, or business software.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Power Automate, APIs, or business process automation.
  • Interest in construction, electrical contracting, field service, project management, or operations.
  • Comfort working iteratively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, including turning rough ideas into working software, showing progress frequently, and accepting feedback openly.

Working Environment & Physical Demands

  • Primarily indoor office work at a desk, with extended use of a computer, monitors, phone, and related office equipment.
  • Full-time, office-based work on-site at the St. Catharines office, working directly alongside office, field, project, service, and leadership teams to learn business workflows and support users.
  • Regular sitting, standing, and typing; an adjustable desk may be used to vary posture and reduce prolonged time in one position.
  • Frequent visual concentration for writing, reviewing, testing, and debugging code and data.
  • Regular verbal and written communication with non-technical users, leadership, and technical advisors.

Tools Provided

  • Professional training courses as deemed helpful
  • Direct mentorship from the CEO and senior technical advisors

  • Extended Healthcare
  • Vision care
  • Dental Care
  • Employee Assistance Program
