About L3HARRIS WESCAM
As a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies and within the Integrated Mission Systems Segment, the WESCAM division develops the most advanced optical sensor and targeting systems for global defense and military sectors, National Security, Search & Rescue and Airborne law enforcement agencies. From long-range covert surveillance missions to search and rescue operations, our MX-series systems, and the mission systems solutions they are a part of, produce stabilized high-magnification electro-optical and infrared images from airborne, marine and ground based platforms, enabling our customers to see first and act first.
About the Role
Are you interested in control systems, sensors, and how complex engineering systems are developed and verified?
We are looking for an Engineering Co-op Student to join our team developing advanced electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems. This role provides an opportunity to do hands-on engineering analysis, testing, and systems engineering to gain exposure to how sophisticated products are designed, integrated, tested and qualified for demanding environments. The position is fast paced and requires close collaboration with cross-functional optical, mechanical, electrical and software engineering teams to ensure design consistency, traceability and compliance with program and industry standards. This is a 16 month co-op term (with 12 month terms occasionally available).
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with developing and maintaining system and product requirements for stabilized EO/IR cameras using database management tools
- Perform requirement analysis, decomposition, traceability from customer needs and verification planning
- Work with engineers from multiple disciplines to design and evaluate complex system designs and architectures
- Support the development of test procedures, engineering documentation and environmental qualification test reports
- Help organize and interpret data generated during environmental, functional and performance testing
- Support analysis and tuning of PID controllers, feedback control algorithms, and inertial navigation systems
- Support flight and vehicle testing of inertial navigation systems and GPS equipment integration
- Support and execute laboratory tests to evaluate camera and control system performance
- Using MATLAB, Python, and other software tools, capture and analyze data, model system behaviour, or automate engineering tasks
Required Capabilities
- Excellent report writing skills
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office applications
- Ability to work with many engineers to coordinate interdepartmental efforts
- Good understanding of both Mechanical and Electrical aspects of Engineering
- Experience with electro-mechanical systems, optic or laser devices is an asset but not required
Desired Education and Experiences
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in either Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Physics, Mathematics, Aviation/Aerospace Engineering, or related field at an accredited university.
- Coursework and/or experience in systems engineering, systems architecture, systems analysis and design, system performance modeling, integration and/or project management, and/or model-based systems engineering an asset
- Coursework and/or experience in Kalman filtering, control theory, state estimation, dynamic system modeling, signal processing is an asset
- Coursework and/or experience in optics, image processing, computer vision is an asset
- Skills with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++ or similar tools is an asset
- Experience with laboratory equipment and data acquisition is an asset
