Original job description

Install, align, assemble, adjust, troubleshoot, and maintain production line machinery and equipment to ensure equipment availability, production rates, and product quality, in accordance with drawings, procedures, and occupational health and safety regulations.

Main Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints, diagrams, and schematics to determine the appropriate work method.
  • Install, align, adjust, dismantle, and relocate fixed industrial machinery and mechanical equipment on the production line (pumps, fans, conveyors, tanks, presses, molds, and fixtures) using hand and power tools while following technical drawings.
  • Operate lifting equipment (cranes, overhead cranes, jacks, pallet trucks) to position machinery and components during assembly, mold/fixture changes, and repairs.
  • Inspect and examine machinery to detect malfunctions and failures; diagnose breakdowns and restore the production line to operation.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical power transmission, vacuum, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, as well as programmable controllers (PLCs).
  • Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts; perform format and production changeovers on the line.
  • Machine parts as required (lathe, grinder) for equipment repair, maintenance, or assembly.
  • Clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance on machinery (first-level preventive maintenance, TPM).
  • Assemble machinery using hand tools, power tools, and basic welding equipment prior to installation or commissioning.
  • Maintain intervention and adjustment records; complete production changeover documentation.
  • Lead autonomous maintenance activities with operators (lubrication/cleaning standards and 5S inspections).
  • Support the commissioning of new equipment and recommend machinery improvements to management.
  • Participate in risk assessments (LOPA/FMEA) and incident investigations with the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Train operators on new machine settings and fixture/mold changeovers.

Required Technical Competencies

  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical schematics, as well as assembly drawings.
  • Mechanical fitting and assembly skills, including alignment (leveling, laser alignment), dimensional tolerances, press fits, controlled bolting, and basic welding.
  • Experience with production machine setup and fixture/tooling changeovers (including SMED quick-change techniques).
  • Basic knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and control circuits.
  • Strong attention to detail, precision, and analytical skills when diagnosing equipment issues.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems, often working alone or in small teams.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with operators and supervisors (shift handovers and escalation of issues).
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and restore production quickly without compromising safety.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma (DES) and vocational training are typically required.
  • Relevant Québec professional credentials (equivalent to trade certifications):
  • DEP in Industrial Mechanics (1,800-hour vocational program in Mechanical Manufacturing, preparing candidates for the Industrial Mechanic/Millwright trade).
  • DEP in Machining Techniques (1,800-hour vocational program in Mechanical Manufacturing), a common pathway for fitting and machining skills.
  • AEC (Attestation of Collegial Studies) in Industrial Mechanics or Equipment Maintenance for continuing education.
  • Relevant experience in a manufacturing or industrial production environment is an asset.
