Position Summary
The DRCC Pharmacy Supervisor provides leadership and supervision of operational activities within DRCC Pharmacy team and is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the day-to-day operations of pharmacy services, including sterile and non-sterile drug compounding activities, pharmacy technician practice, workflow coordination, quality assurance, and operational support for pharmacists and the Pharmacy Manager (including, but not limited to, medication procurement and pharmacy automation).
The Supervisor will participate in the development, ongoing monitoring and administration of departmental policies and procedures. The Supervisor works in collaboration with the DRCC Pharmacy Manager to ensure that all services provided are based on regulatory requirements, best practices, and align with DRCC strategic priorities. Working collaboratively with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nursing, and other interdisciplinary team members, the incumbent promotes safe, efficient, and compliant medication-use processes while fostering a culture of quality, patient safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
The Supervisor serves as an operational leader within the department and acts as a key resource for staff and a delegate for the Pharmacy Manager as assigned.
Duties And Responsibilities
Operational Leadership & Support
" Coordinate daily pharmacy operations of the DRCC Pharmacy team to ensure safe and efficient medication distribution and compounding services.
" Monitor staffing levels, workload distribution, and workflow priorities
" Create and maintain the pharmacy technician schedule, including the management of vacation approvals and denials
" Identify and address workflow challenges and operational issues.
" Assist with development and implementation of operational procedures and best practices.
" Support the maintenance of the Lakeridge Health - DRCC Hazardous Drug Preparation and BUD chart
" Support the development, training and optimization of pharmacy automation (BD IV Prep, RIVA) including the implementation of policies and procedures for their use
" Support maintenance of drug and diluent profiles in BD IV Prep and RIVA
" Co-ordinate preventative maintenance service visits or emergency support visits with external vendors (eg RIVA, BD)
" Liaise with other Pharmacy colleagues within the Central East Regional Cancer Program to enhance workflows
" Support the Pharmacy Manager in achieving departmental goals, performance indicators, and strategic objectives.
" Assume designated operational responsibilities in the absence of the Pharmacy Manager.
" Perform other duties as assigned
Pharmacy Compounding Oversight
" Provide oversight of sterile and non-sterile drug compounding activities in the DRCC Pharmacy.
" Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, accreditation standards,
" Collaborate with pharmacy manager to ensure all operations meet regulatory and safety standards as well as organizational policies, and professional practice requirements. (ISMP, NAPRA, OCP, Accreditation standards), including compliance with all documentation and logs required by OCP and NAPRA guidelines as it relates to sterile compounding
" Lead investigations and corrective actions related to compounding incidents, variances, and quality concerns.
" Support environmental monitoring, competency assessments, and ongoing quality improvement initiatives including liaising with Environmental Services leaders and Engineering staff to coordinate monthly cleaning of the DRCC Pharmacy sterile hazardous clean room (and associated training/certification of staff in these areas as needed)
Pharmacy Technician Leadership
" Provide direct leadership and operational oversight for pharmacy technicians.
" Support recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and development of staff.
" Participate in performance management processes, coaching, mentoring, and recognition activities.
" Promote full scope utilization of regulated pharmacy technicians where appropriate.
" Facilitate staff engagement and support a positive work environment.
" In coordination with DRCC Pharmacy Purchasers, optimize inventory for both pharmacy drugs (i.e., supporting backorder management, maintaining inventory levels, reviewing and managing min/max stock levels of drugs, managing drugs nearing expiry) and pharmacy supplies (i.e., Ordering, maintaining and following up on all non-drug orders and communicating with administrative and LH purchasing staff on a regular basis to meet the supply demands of the DRCC Pharmacy)
" In coordination with the Clinical Trials Pharmacy staff, verify clinical trial summaries created for sterile hazardous IV preparations
" Ensure staff completion of annual competencies
" Facilitate technician huddles
Quality, Safety, and Compliance
" Promote a culture of patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
" Participate in Accreditation Canada activities and regulatory inspections.
" Monitor compliance with medication management policies and procedures.
" Lead or participate in audits, incident reviews, and process evaluations.
" Develop action plans to address identified operational risks and quality concerns.
Qualifications
" Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Education Program at an accredited college.
" Current registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
" Minimum of 5 years of hospital pharmacy practice, including sterile compounding.
" Experience in a leadership role, an asset
" Experience using aseptic technique, drug dispensing systems and equipment, pharmaceutical compounding and packaging, pharmaceutical calculations, working knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terminology.
" Experience in an oncology pharmacy setting preferred
" Experience in Pharmacy automation systems, preferred.
" Demonstrated experience with developing and leading safety and quality improvement initiatives, preferred.
" Knowledge of legislation and pharmacy related regulatory requirements.
" Effective interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
" Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
" Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize and work independently.
" Demonstrated ability to lead effectively.
" Proven conflict management/resolution skills.
" Proven ability to problem-solve and critically analyze issues.
