About Lantern

Lantern is the specialty care platform connecting people with the best care when they need it most. By curating a Network of Excellence comprised of the nation's top specialists for surgery, cancer care, infusions and more, Lantern delivers excellent care with significant cost savings to employers and their workforces. Lantern also pairs members with a dedicated care team, including Care Advocates and nurses, for the entirety of their care journey, helping them get back to good health, back to their families and back to work. With convenient access to specialists nationwide, Lantern means quality care is within driving distance for most. Lantern is trusted by the nation's largest employers to deliver care to more than 6 million members across the country. Learn more about us at lanterncare.com.

Lantern is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our expanding product engineering pods. This is a strategic and highly visible role focused on driving your team’s architectural consistency, elevating technical standards, and helping scale our cloud-native healthcare platform to meet the needs of patients, care advocates, and enterprise clients.

As a Staff Engineer, you’ll partner with cross-functional teams – including engineering leads, product managers, clinicians, and compliance – to influence the design and delivery of scalable, secure, and maintainable systems. You will provide hands-on technical leadership across the stack while guiding engineering teams through complex architectural decisions, platform evolution, and modernization initiatives.

We are looking for someone who thrives in ambiguity, can zoom out to evaluate systems holistically, but is not afraid to dive into code to unblock teams or lead by example. If you enjoy solving complex system design problems, mentoring other engineers, and enabling organizational scale through thoughtful architecture, we’d love to hear from you.

Location: Hybrid - at least 3 days/wk in our Vancouver, BC Canada office

Responsibilities

Act as a senior contributor and technical leader across key domains, collaborating within and across multiple pods to deliver cohesive and scalable solutions
Drive system design and architecture for secure, resilient, and performant services using modern cloud-native technologies (Azure preferred)
Collaborate with engineering, product, and compliance partners to ensure architectural alignment with business priorities, regulatory constraints, and product roadmaps
Guide and mentor engineers, both formally and informally, on architecture best practices, technical growth, and system-level thinking
Champion code quality, testability, and design standards, providing deep technical reviews and working examples that elevate engineering excellence
Evaluate frameworks, tools, and integration strategies to support scale and interoperability
Contribute to and evolve Lantern’s internal technical excellence guidelines, reference implementations, and technical documentation, with an emphasis on innovation, AI integration, and long-term maintainability
Lead technical discovery and prototyping for complex integrations and data flow challenges, including those involving FHIR, HL7, and Kafka
Influence technical direction and execution of multi-team projects, ensuring delivery meets high standards of reliability, security, and performance

Requirements & Qualifications

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
8+ years of professional software development experience, with at least 3+ years in a senior, staff, or principal-level role
Proven track record designing and building distributed systems, APIs, and cloud-native services using .NET Core (C#) and modern front-end frameworks (React or Angular)
Strong experience in domain-driven design (DDD), microservices, and event-driven architectures using tools such as Apache Kafka (or similar platforms like RabbitMQ, AWS SNS/SQS), including familiarity with saga patterns
Hands-on experience architecting solutions on Azure or AWS, including serverless functions, messaging queues, managed databases, and infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, Bicep)
Demonstrated ability to lead architectural initiatives that drive improvements in scalability, performance, reliability, and developer experience
Strong understanding of CI/CD, observability, DevSecOps, and secrets management best practices
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills; able to clearly explain complex technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences

Nice to Have:

Experience applying FHIR, HL7, or X12 standards within healthcare systems
Experience with AI/ML services or architectural contributions to innovation-driven initiatives
Familiarity with cross-cloud or hybrid-cloud architectural design patterns

Strong Candidates Will:

Thrive in ambiguity, comfortable zooming out to evaluate systems holistically while staying hands-on enough to dive into code and unblock teams
Communicate complex architectural trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Coach and elevate other engineers through code review and design discussions, not just their own output
Balance architectural rigor with engineering velocity and product needs, rather than optimizing for either in isolation
Take ownership at the system level, driving multi-team initiatives to completion rather than staying within a single service’s boundaries

Benefits:

Medical Insurance
Dental Insurance
Vision Insurance
Short- & Long-Term Disability
Life Insurance
Flexible PTO
RRSP with company match

About You:

You use LOGIC in your decision making and understand that progress is critical to making change. You focus on the execution of your content while balancing a fast-paced environment and you take the time to celebrate both the small & big wins.
INCLUSION is a core tenant of your personal beliefs. A diverse and inclusive environment is incredibly important to you. You understand and desire to be a part of a diverse team with different experiences and perspectives & you cherish the differences in each individual that you interact with.
You have the GRIT, drive and ambition to tackle big problems. Big problems require big ideas and a team that supports new ideas.
You care deeply for your customers are driven to keep HUMANITY in all decisions. Your customers aren’t just the individuals using your product. They are the driving factor in your motivation to make a change.
Integrity guides you in life. Focusing on the TRUTH vs. giving people the answers they want to hear.

These pillars of LIGHT are a reminder to our team that we are making a difference by providing guidance and support in navigating the often complex and confusing landscape of healthcare. We hope that through this LIGHT, individuals can find their way to the best care, resources, and support they need to get back to life.

If this sounds like you, we would love to connect to speak further about career opportunities at Lantern.

Please apply to our role & someone from our Talent Acquisition Team will reach out to help you navigate our interview process.
