General Information

Reporting directly to the Director General, the Assistant Director General carries out the mandates assigned by the Director General concerning the administration of the School Board’s activities, programs and resources. The incumbent exercises the duties and powers assigned by the Director General or delegated by the Council of Commissioners, in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory framework.

The Assistant Director General provides strategic leadership for the educational division of the School Board. The position oversees the Regional Directors and school operations, Educational Services, Student Services and International Programs, ensuring that these areas work together to advance the School Board’s vision and priorities.

As a member of the senior executive team, the Assistant Director General supports the development and implementation of a coherent vision for schools and student success, including the continued advancement of the School Board’s inclusive model. The position requires a strong understanding of school operations and the ability to connect educational priorities, professional expertise, services and resources across the organization.

The Assistant Director General plays a central role in building collaborative environments that recognize and harness the expertise of individuals while integrating that expertise into an effective organizational system. Through a systems-thinking approach, the incumbent aligns resources, structures and processes so that schools and centres receive coordinated, responsive and efficient support.

The position also works closely with the Director General, the Council of Commissioners and its committees. The successful candidate must understand the respective roles and divisions of authority among governance, senior administration, departments and educational institutions and provide clear information, strategic advice and appropriate follow-up within that framework.

General Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director General, the Assistant Director General will:

Support the development and implementation of the School Board’s vision, strategic direction, policies and organizational priorities;
Provide strategic leadership and oversight for Regional Directors and school operations, Educational Services, Student Services and International Programs;
Advance a coherent vision for schools, student success and the School Board’s inclusive model;
Align people, services, resources and processes to ensure schools and centres receive coordinated, responsive and efficient support;
Promote collaborative environments that recognize individual and team expertise and integrate it into organizational planning, problem-solving and decision-making;
Supervise, support and evaluate the senior staff under their authority and establish clear priorities and expectations;
Monitor educational and organizational results, anticipate emerging needs and risks, and advise the Director General on appropriate strategies;
Support the effective allocation and management of human, financial, material and information resources within the educational wing;
Participate in meetings of the Council of Commissioners and its committees, ensuring appropriate preparation, strategic advice and follow-up while respecting established divisions of authority;
Represent the Director General or the School Board, as assigned, and maintain effective relationships with employees, administrators, commissioners, community organizations, government representatives and other partners; and
Perform any other related duties, mandates or responsibilities assigned by the Director General.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

Hold a graduate or undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study certifying the completion of a university program of at least three years;
Currently occupy a senior executive or senior staff position, excluding a manager position, in a school board or school service centre;
Have at least eight years of relevant management experience, including a minimum of three years in a senior staff position; and
Be fluent in English and French, both orally and in writing.

The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate

A commitment to advancing the School Board’s overall vision and supporting a coherent vision for schools, student success and inclusive education;
A strong understanding of school operations and the relationships among schools, centres, departments and governance structures;
A strong understanding of the Québec Education Program, the Education Act and the Basic School Regulation;
A systems-thinking approach and the ability to connect people, resources and processes to create coordinated, responsive and efficient systems;
The ability to build collaborative environments, recognize individual expertise and integrate that expertise into organizational planning and decision-making;
Experience leading complex portfolios and aligning multiple services around shared priorities;
The ability to anticipate emerging needs and translate strategic direction into clear and practical action;
Experience working effectively with elected governance bodies, supporting committees through clear analysis and follow-up, and understanding the respective authority of the Council of Commissioners, the Director General and the administration; and
Sound judgment, political acuity and integrity, together with the ability to positively influence others, build strong relationships and inspire confidence among employees, administrators, commissioners, and community partners.

Salary Range and Working Conditions

This position is classified as Class 14. Remuneration and other conditions of employment are governed by the Regulation respecting certain conditions of employment of senior executives of school service centres and of the Comité de gestion de la taxe scolaire de l’île de Montréal, as amended.

Salary upon appointment will be determined in accordance with the candidate’s qualifications and experience and the applicable regulatory provisions.
