Original job description
Lexus Engineering Ltd. is an Edmonton-based consulting engineering firm providing mechanical, electrical, energy and project services for commercial, industrial, institutional, multi-residential and specialty facilities across Western Canada. We focus on practical, cost-conscious engineering solutions that balance performance, constructability, energy use, maintainability and project risk.
Our mechanical work includes HVAC, indoor air quality, plumbing and drainage, fire protection, refrigeration, specialty ventilation, existing-building assessments, retrofit design and new construction.
The OpportunityWe are seeking a Junior to Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to help design building mechanical systems from early concept through construction. This role suits an EIT or developing P.Eng. who wants broad, hands-on experience, direct involvement with project leaders and increasing responsibility as technical capability grows.
You will work on HVAC, plumbing, sanitary and storm drainage, and fire sprinkler systems. Assignments may include renovations, equipment replacements, tenant improvements, facility upgrades and new construction. The successful candidate will contribute to calculations, equipment selection, drawings, specifications, coordination, field reviews and construction support under the guidance of senior engineering staff.
Key Responsibilities· Assist with and progressively take responsibility for mechanical building-system design from investigation and concept development through construction documents and construction-phase services.
· Perform heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, equipment sizing and selection, duct sizing, hydronic piping design and related engineering calculations.
· Design domestic water, natural gas, sanitary drainage, storm drainage and venting systems, including pipe sizing and fixture/equipment coordination.
· Assist with fire sprinkler and fire-protection system layouts, hydraulic design coordination and code review under appropriate professional supervision.
· Prepare and coordinate mechanical plans, details, schematics, equipment schedules, specifications, design notes and technical reports (knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit is an asset).
· Coordinate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, civil and electrical disciplines, as well as contractors, suppliers, manufacturers and authorities having jurisdiction.
· Participate in field investigations, site measurements, construction reviews and deficiency reviews; document existing conditions clearly and accurately.
· Review shop drawings and product data, help respond to RFIs, and support design changes during construction.
· Assist with project schedules, design budgets, work planning, proposals and cost-conscious system comparisons.
· Apply Lexus Engineering design standards, checklists and quality-control processes, and contribute ideas that improve workflows and deliverables.
· Communicate professionally with clients and project partners and raise technical, scope, schedule or coordination concerns promptly.
Education and Professional Registration· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from, or equivalent.
· Registered with APEGA as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or eligible for registration in Alberta.
· Approximately 1 to 5 years of relevant building-systems, consulting, design or construction experience. Strong new graduates with applicable co-op, internship or project experience may also be considered.
Technical Qualifications· Working knowledge of HVAC fundamentals, psychrometrics, ventilation, heat transfer, equipment selection and air-distribution design.
· Working knowledge of plumbing and drainage design, including domestic water, sanitary and storm systems, venting and natural gas.
· Familiarity with fire protection and sprinkler design principles; experience applying NFPA 13 is an asset.
· Ability to read architectural, structural, civil, electrical and mechanical drawings and understand interdisciplinary coordination requirements.
· Familiarity with the National Building Code - 2023 Alberta Edition, National Plumbing Code of Canada 2020, National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, Alberta Fire Code and relevant ASHRAE and SMACNA standards.
· Experience with load-calculation and equipment-selection software. Familiarity with energy modelling is an asset.
· Proficiency in AutoCAD is preferred; Revit MEP/BIM experience is a strong asset.
· Competence with Microsoft 365 applications and PDF review/markup tools.
What You Bring· Sound engineering judgement, curiosity and a willingness to learn the fundamentals rather than rely only on software output.
· Clear written and verbal communication, careful documentation and professional follow-through.
· Strong organization and the ability to manage priorities across several active assignments.
· An accurate, practical and constructability-minded approach to design.
· Ability to work independently on defined tasks while seeking guidance when technical risk or uncertainty requires it.
· Willingness to attend project sites and meetings in Edmonton and elsewhere as required.
· A valid driver's licence and access to reliable transportation for site visits.
Why Join Lexus Engineering· Broad project exposure across commercial, industrial, institutional, multi-residential and specialty facilities.
· Direct involvement in investigations, design decisions, coordination and construction support, not only isolated production tasks.
· Mentorship from experienced engineers and a clear path toward greater technical and project responsibility.
· Opportunities to strengthen HVAC, plumbing, drainage, fire-protection, field-review, AutoCAD and Revit skills.
· A collaborative Edmonton team focused on practical engineering, professional accountability and solutions that work in the real world.
· Competitive compensation based on experience, technical capability and professional registration.
How to ApplyPlease submit a resume and a brief cover letter describing your building-systems experience and professional registration status. If available, include a short project list or work sample showing your role in HVAC, plumbing, drainage or fire-protection design.
Submit your application through the Lexus Engineering website. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
