Company Overview:

Liberty Mutual Canada is the Canadian operation of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. We offer a broad suite of commercial insurance products and solutions to mid-size and large Canadian companies with Canadian, North American and/or multinational risks. If you are unsure whether or not your experience matches every requirement below, we encourage you to apply anyway. We are looking for varied and diverse perspectives and experiences that we can add to our team!

Our core values guide all of our decision-making and come to life through our benefits and employee programs. We offer:

A premier flexible work environment (a combination of on-site & remote work) supporting our employees in their pursuit of a healthy work-life balance

Competitive health & dental benefits plan

Market-leading pension plan

Competitive time off policy

External education & tuition reimbursement programs

Employee & Family Assistance Programs

An opportunity to get involved and become a member of one of our national employee committees – social responsibility, employee engagement, diversity, equity & inclusion

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Developer to join the Mighty Moose team, focused on API integrations and LLM-powered applications. You will design and implement innovative software solutions, working closely with developers, architects, product owners and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality products and services.

What you will work with: Mighty Moose sits at the center of Liberty Mutual's Underwriting & Policy Platform, connecting the Underwriting Workbench, policy lifecycle management, and rating & pricing services across our US and Canadian operations under an enterprise API-first architecture. Our underwriting ecosystem also includes LLM-powered applications, such as D&O Copilot, built with Python and FastAPI, so this role spans both our core Node.js/TypeScript serverless APIs and these Python-based LLM services.

Agentic engineering, using AI coding agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) tooling and other automation, is also a growing part of how we build and support software here.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and deploy backend services and APIs using our AWS serverless stack (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB), with attention to code quality, scalability, and security.
Build and maintain Python/FastAPI services that power LLM-based applications such as D&O Copilot, alongside our core Node.js/TypeScript APIs.
Apply agentic engineering practices and LLM-based solutions, including AI coding agents and automation tooling, to accelerate delivery, strengthen testing, and modernize our API products.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather and define requirements aligned with business objectives.

Support and share knowledge with junior developers to foster continuous learning.

Participate in code reviews, ensuring code quality, scalability, and security standards are met.

Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, ensuring the reliability and performance of our applications.
Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, advocating for the adoption of best practices.

Skills & Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in backend, API/serverless, and LLM-powered application development.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to new challenges.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js, building serverless applications on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, EventBridge).

Strong proficiency in Python, including FastAPI and Pydantic, for building LLM-powered services (e.g., chat and recommendation APIs).
Strong knowledge of SQL/NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, PostgreSQL) and AWS services.

Experience with Infrastructure as Code (ideally AWS CDK) is a strong plus.

Experience with automated testing (Jest, pytest) and CI/CD pipelines; familiarity with OpenAPI/REST contracts and code quality tooling (ESLint, Prettier) is a plus.

Interest in agentic engineering and LLM-based solutions (AI coding agents, Copilot agent mode, MCP tooling) is a strong plus.

Liberty Mutual Canada is committed to pay transparency and fair, equitable hiring. For roles based in Ontario & British Columbia, we publish a Target Hiring Range in compliance with the Ontario & British Columbia Pay Transparency Act.

This posting is for an active, current vacancy.

Target Hiring Range:

CAD $85,000-95,000 per year (base salary).

This range represents the expected annual base salary for this role, however, offers above the published maximum may be approved with appropriate business authorization. Final offers will be determined based on each candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the needs of the role. The posted range does not include variable compensation (bonus), allowances, or benefits. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.

We do not use AI‑based screening tools in our hiring process. Candidates who complete an interview and remain under consideration may request, and will receive, feedback within 45 days.

Liberty Mutual Canada is committed to fostering an inclusive, accessible environment where all employees feel valued and supported. We are committed to building a workforce that is representative of the communities we operate in and serve. If you require an accommodation for the recruitment/interview process due to a disability (which may be invisible or visible, temporary or permanent), please let us know and we will work with you to meet your needs.
