Senior Product Design Engineer

Description:

The Senior Product Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of HVAC products, with a focus on Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS), Chiller Systems, Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV)Systems, and related air-handling equipment. This role provides technical leadership throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development and product design to testing, manufacturing support, and field performance evaluation. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams including Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, and Service to develop innovative, reliable, and cost-effective HVAC solutions that meet customer, regulatory, and business requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Product Design & Development:

Lead the design and development of HVAC equipment including DOAS units, ERVsystems, air handling units, chillers, heat pumps, and associated components.
Develop system architectures, product specifications, and engineering requirements based on customer and market needs.
Create and review 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and product documentation.
Perform engineering calculations including: Airflow and pressure drop analysis, Psychrometric calculations, refrigeration system design, heat transfer and energy recovery analysis, fan and motor selection.
Evaluate and select HVAC components such as compressors, heat exchangers, fans, dampers, valves, pumps, controls, and energy recovery devices.

Technical Leadership

Serve as a technical expert and mentor to Product Engineers, Designers, and Technicians.
Review engineering designs to ensure compliance with company standards and industry best practices.
Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis(FMEA).
Support strategic technology roadmaps and product innovation initiatives.

Product Validation & Testing

Develop and execute product validation plans.
Analyze laboratory and field performance data.
Support certification testing and compliance activities.
Investigate design issues and implement corrective actions.

Manufacturing & Operations Support

Support manufacturing teams during product launches and production ramp-up.
Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), routings, and engineering change documentation within ERP systems.
Collaborate with Operations to improve manufacturability, quality, and cost.
Provide technical support for supplier qualification and component sourcing activities.

Regulatory Compliance.

Ensure product compliance with applicable standards and regulations including: CSA, UL, AHRI, ASHRAE, NEC, NFPA, energy efficiency regulations, building code requirement.

Continuous Improvement

Lead value engineering and cost reduction initiatives.
Identify opportunities for product performance enhancements and manufacturing efficiencies.
Drive standardization of engineering practices, design tools, and documentation.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation preferred or eligibility to obtain.
8+ years of HVAC product design and development experience.
Proven experience designing and developing: dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS), Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) Systems, Chiller Systems, Air Handling Units (AHU), Commercial and Industrial HVAC equipment.
Experience supporting full product lifecycle development from concept through commercialization.
Strong knowledge of, HVAC system design principles, heat transfer and thermodynamics, psychometrics, airflow and fluid dynamics, Building mechanical systems.
Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or similar.
Experience with ERP systems and engineering BOM management.
Familiarity with CFD, FEA, and simulation tools is considered an asset.
Strong understanding of DFM, DFA, and Lean Manufacturing principles.
Ability to lead technical projects and cross-functional teams.
Strong mentoring and coaching capabilities.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Strong project management and organizational abilities.

Preferred Experience

Commercial HVAC equipment manufacturing.
Low-GWP refrigerant technologies.
Heat pump applications.
Product certification testing and regulatory compliance.
New product introduction (NPI) and stage-gate product development processes.
