Original job description
💡Our Mission: Make working out something everyone looks forward to.
Liftoff is the Duolingo of fitness, empowering anyone to start and stay at the gym so they develop healthier, more powerful habits.
We're a mission-driven team that moves fast, owns the details, and does the work. We're fully bootstrapped, profitable, and built from zero to $8M+ ARR in under two years.
About the TeamYou'll join the Product team and work closely with our Senior Product Designer and the Head of Product, collaborating with Engineering, Design, and Growth.
Design front-runs everything we build. The surfaces you make are what our experiments run on, what our retention depends on, and what over a million people open at the gym.
About the RoleWe're hiring a Junior Mobile UI/UX Designer to design app surfaces, help improve what's already live, and contribute to the design system behind both. You'll get real ownership early, with close feedback and review to help you grow fast.
UX is the priority. You'll learn to diagnose and fix existing experiences, not only design new ones, and you'll take part in the user research that backs those calls.
Your core focus areas:
- Mobile screen, flow, and component design
- UX improvements to live surfaces
- User interviews and feedback loops
- Design system contributions
- Graphic and visual assets, including our mascot Jymbo
- Flows that ship. PM ideas and briefs become mockups, then production surfaces, with fewer revision rounds over time.
- Live UX improvements. You spot friction in existing screens and turn it into concrete fixes.
- Research that changes designs. What you hear in interviews and community feedback shows up in your work.
- A consistent design system. You use and extend existing components instead of creating one-offs.
- Clear communication on what you designed and why.
- Growth into owning an area of the app end-to-end.
- Design mobile surfacesTurn PM ideas and feature briefs into flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups in Figma, with guidance and review
- Build screens and components that balance playful, game-like design with product clarity and usability
- Learn to think in hierarchy, flow, accessibility, cognitive load, and micro-interactions
- Improve existing UXReview live app surfaces and flag where users stall, drop, or get confused
- Revamp and upgrade existing screens with sharper UX and fresh visuals
- Take part in the feedback loopHelp plan and run user interviews and usability sessions
- Pull signal from community feedback, support threads, and product metrics
- Turn findings into specific design changes
- Contribute to the design systemApply and extend a consistent visual language across the app
- Build reusable components that work across screen sizes
- Create graphic and visual assetsIn-app graphics: splash screens, status cards, game-like items, collectibles
- Vector character work for our mascot Jymbo, including new poses and outfits as features need them
- Occasional graphics for landing pages and social
- Communicate animation intent clearly. Storyboard or spec the simple motion your designs need, and execute it in Rive when it's straightforward.
- Solid UX fundamentals. You can explain why a layout works, not just build it.
- Figma fluency: Auto Layout, Components, Variables, Prototyping
- A mobile-first portfolio. School, personal, freelance, or side projects all count.
- Curiosity about users. Any interviews, usability tests, or feedback you've acted on is a big plus.
- 0–2 years of experience, or equivalent work shown in your portfolio
- Clear written communication. You can explain your decisions and take feedback well.
- Comfort in a startup environment: short feedback loops, fast learning, no red tape
We don't expect you to check every box. We care most about ownership, judgment, and a drive to get better fast.
Bonus Attributes- Video game UI/UX experience or a real passion for it
- Illustration experience and a sharp sense of visual humor
- Experience working within a design system
- Projects in health, wellness, social, or gaming
- Created shareable or viral graphics
- Can execute simple animations yourself. Rive for stateful animations, Adobe After Effects + Lottie for motion graphics and VFX.
- Can implement your own designs (React Native / Expo, Tailwind). Useful, though not part of the core job.
- Sustained depth in a craft, sport, or community outside of work
You don't need prior experience with every tool, but you should be excited to work in this stack.
- Design: Figma (primary), Adobe After Effects + Lottie, Rive
- App: React Native (Expo), Typescript
- Backend: Supabase, Vercel, tRPC, Node.js
- Monetization: RevenueCat, Superwall
- Experimentation / Analytics: Statsig
- Autonomy and Ownership: real responsibility from day one, with the support to grow into it.
- Mentorship: work directly alongside senior design and product leadership.
- Top-of-the-Market Cash & Equity Compensation: we pay for high performers.
- A World-Class Team: low-ego, high standards, and real ownership.
- Hiring Manager Screening
- Take-Home Challenge (app screen design)
- Design Deep Dive (portfolio walkthrough plus a live UX critique of an existing Liftoff surface)
- Work week trial (paid, simulating real work environment)
- Competitive cash (based on level and scope)
- Company-paid lunch every day (if you're in office)
- Lifetime Liftoff Pro membership
Liftoff is an equal opportunity employer. We hire and grow talent based on strengths, potential, and performance, and we are committed to building an inclusive environment where everyone can do their best work.
To Apply- Provide your portfolio showing product design work (mobile, web, or games). We want to see your process and decisions, not only final screens.
- Your resume
- Any character, mascot, or in-app visual work you've made
- (Optional) Any motion work: Rive files, After Effects clips, or motion mockups
