Original job description
About LJ Welding Automation:
LJ Welding Automation is a global leader in welding automation and material handling solutions. With a presence in over 55 countries, LJ specializes in custom-engineered systems for industries like wind tower fabrication, aerospace, oil & gas and rail infrastructure. You will work within a highly skilled engineering environment focused on developing cutting-edge, custom industrial welding machines tailored to unique customer requirements. If you thrive in a fast-paced, innovative atmosphere, we want to hear from you.
About the Role:
As a Mechanical Engineer (EIT), you’ll join a talented, multidisciplinary engineering team that designs, develops and brings to life automated welding and material handling equipment. You’ll work on new products, improvements to existing products and custom solutions built for specific customers. You’ll be involved from requirements through design, testing, commissioning and support. This role suits an early-career engineer who wants hands-on machine design work and a clear path toward professional registration.
The Role and What Day-To-Day:
- Requirements & Collaboration: Work with engineering, sales and customers to define project requirements. Coordinate with manufacturing to meet milestones and production schedules.
- Mechanical Design: Design new products and improvements, drawing on team input, customer feedback and your own creativity. Produce detailed 3D models, drawings and weldment details in SolidWorks.
- Engineering Analysis: Perform design calculations and Finite Element Analysis to confirm structural capacity and performance.
- Safety by Design: Conduct risk and hazard assessments and build appropriate safety systems into machine designs.
- Testing & Validation: Design, run and review test plans to verify performance, reliability and safety.
- Problem Solving: Troubleshoot issues, lead root cause analysis, and develop corrective and preventive actions.
- Commissioning & Support: Commission custom and production equipment, support quality control, and provide customer support when needed.
- Continuous Improvement: Analyze equipment, processes and procedures to improve performance, quality and safety, in line with our Quality Management System.
What you Bring:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), with 0 to 4 years of experience.
- Registered with APEGA as an Engineer in Training, or eligible to register.
- Machine design experience and knowledge of manufacturing processes.
- Understanding of shop drawing standards (ASME Y14), tolerancing, weldment detailing and bills of materials.
- Demonstrated proficiency in SolidWorks, including modeling, drafting, FEA and PDM.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Able to work both independently and as part of a team, and to adapt in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Comfortable working in an industrial shop, including wearing PPE and lifting up to 50 lb (about 23 kg).
- Legally able to travel to and from the United States.
