Our Gocator smart sensors and GoPxL software run on the factory floor, doing 100% inline 3D inspection for manufacturers in automotive, electronics, battery, and more. Because the processing happens on the edge device itself, every build we ship ends up running on real hardware on a production line, where a bad release means a stopped line, not a page refresh.
Join our Software Operations team as a Build & Test Automation Engineer and become the engine behind how our code gets from a developer's keyboard to a sensor on that line.
You'll own and optimize our Bamboo CI pipelines and our custom-built build system, keep our C++ and TypeScript/JS front end codebases compiling cleanly across multiple architectures and compilers (GCC and MSVC), and act as the bridge between development and operations. That includes the hands-on part: building and maintaining the device test rigs that run our automated tests against real Gocators, not just emulators.
Possible projects include dependency and build caching that turns 40-minute builds into coffee-break-length ones, adding pipeline capabilities that didn't exist last quarter, and building out the automation that catches problems before a human has to. You'll also own supply-chain work like versioning, artifact publishing, and SBOM generation, and integrate SAST/SCA scanning into every build as part of our EU Cyber Resilience Act readiness.
When a build breaks or a test fails, you won't stop at "here's a log and a ticket." You'll use AI tools like Claude to help pinpoint the root cause and, when it's within reach, drive the fix yourself: open the PR, validate the branch build, and get it reviewed and merged.
This is a hybrid role (3 days in our Burnaby office) where you'll apply what you know to real, well-defined deliverables: designing, building, optimizing, testing, and documenting the pipelines that keep everyone else shipping fast.
You will report to the Team Lead of our Software Operations team. You'll work day-to-day with:
- GoPxL feature developers - who own and review PRs for product code, including your build-fix PRs
- QA to turn manual test effort into automated coverage
- Firmware on toolchains, cross-compilation, and device test rigs
- Release Management - on versioning, artifacts, and release readiness
- Own the pipelines: Maintain our Bamboo CI pipelines and custom Python-based build system, using Docker-based build environments for fast, reproducible builds. Help us migrate to Bitbucket Pipelines in the future.
- Keep our tool chains healthy: Manage C++ builds across multiple target architectures with GCC (cross-compiled) and MSVC; diagnose and resolve compiler, linker, and toolchain issues.
- Make builds fast: Implement dependency and build caching, parallelization, and test-run optimizations to cut feedback time.
- Run tests on real hardware: Build and maintain device test rigs and the automation that deploys builds to physical Gocators and runs tests against them.
- Grow automation coverage: Integrate Google Test, pytest, and Jest suites into the developer workflow; find manual testing that should be automated and automate it.
- Own the Supply Chain: Drive versioning, artifact publishing, and SBOM generation; help shape our firmware/package code-signing plans.
- Harden the pipeline: Integrate SAST and SCA into every build as part of EU Cyber Resilience Act readiness.
- Fix, don’t just file: Triage build and test failures with AI-assisted log analysis, then open PRs, validate branch builds, and merge fixes with the owning team's review.
- Multiply with AI: Use Claude and other LLM tools for build scripting, debugging, log analysis, and code review, and build agent skills the rest of the team can use. Help extend our existing AI automation that takes tickets through PR, CI, and merge.
Education and Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience working as a Build/Release Developer or Automation Developer with a strong focus on CI/CD infrastructure and pipeline automation.
- Bachelor's Degree (or comparable experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong Python for build tooling and test automation.
- Strong practical C++ skills: comfortable untangling compiler and linker errors across toolchains, and fixing bugs in product code.
- Real experience with cross-compilation toolchains (GCC) and Linux build systems.
- Experience building Docker-based build environments.
- Experience with Git and at least one CI/CD platform (Bamboo, GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines, Jenkins, etc.).
- A track record of carrying work from vague requirements to shipped: the design conversation, the testing, and the follow-through.
- You notice what slows the team down and fix it without being asked.
- You use AI in real work, such as optimizing your own workflows or building agent skills for a team, while still producing production-grade output.
What Sets You Apart (The Desirables)
- Experience integrating SAST/SCA tooling and working toward secure-SDLC or regulatory requirements (e.g., EU CRA).
- Experience with build caching at scale (e.g., ccache, sccache, remote caches, Conan/vcpkg binary caching).
- Experience building Docker build environments within CI/CD pipelines.
- Development experience in embedded, resource-constrained environments.
- Curiosity about industrial vision and metrology.
