Join our Customs Brokerage team as a Junior Customs Rater, supporting the processing of international commercial cargo importations in compliance with the requirements of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
The successful candidate will assist with the preparation and processing of customs entries, review shipment documentation, support release activities, and provide timely service to clients and internal teams. This position is well suited for someone looking to develop their knowledge and career in Canadian customs brokerage.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the accurate and timely processing of commercial import shipments across various modes of transportation.
- Prepare customs entries using information and documentation provided by carriers, freight forwarders, importers, and clients.
- Review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and other supporting documents for completeness and accuracy.
- Assist with customs release operations and follow up on outstanding information or documentation.
- Review shipment information to identify missing or inconsistent details and escalate issues when required.
- Communicate professionally with clients, carriers, freight forwarders, CBSA officers, and other government agencies.
- Respond to routine inquiries from customers, drivers, carriers, and internal departments.
- Assist with customs entry corrections, amendments, and other post-entry requirements.
- Assist with auditing and reviewing customs entries for accuracy and completeness.
- Request, collect, and verify required customs documentation.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure assigned work is completed within established deadlines and company standards.
- Escalate complex classification, valuation, PGA, or compliance issues to a senior rater or supervisor.
- Perform other customs-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 1–2 years of experience in customs brokerage, freight forwarding, logistics, or a related field is an asset.
- Previous experience as a Customs Rater, Customs Clerk, Entry Writer, or similar position is an asset.
- Basic understanding of Canadian customs procedures and CBSA requirements.
- Familiarity with tariff classification is an asset.
- Basic knowledge of import permits and Participating Government Agency (PGA) requirements is an asset.
- Previous experience with IID (Integrated Import Declaration) releases is an asset.
- Familiarity with CanData or other customs brokerage software is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple shipments and deadlines.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a team environment.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and develop knowledge of Canadian customs regulations and procedures.
Education
- High School Diploma required.
- Post-secondary education in Customs, Logistics, Supply Chain, International Trade, or a related field is an asset.
- Customs-related training or designation, such as Certified Customs Specialist (CCS), is an asset.
Language Ability
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
