Original job description
Conducts or participates in the research, design, development, and testing of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) or custom computing hardware and/or other electrical components. Develops designs for the installation of components and assemblies into chassis, racks, cabinets, workstations, customer facilities, and/or shelters. Plans, directs, reviews and coordinates preparation of project documentation to ensure customer contract and company requirements are met. Prepares specifications, evaluates vendors, and analyzes test reports.
Role
This role is important in fulfilling the strategic roadmap goals of Lockheed Martin Canada Inc. (Lockheed Martin). As part of the Engineering team, you will be directly involved in translating customer requirements into best-in-class product solutions. These resultant products/systems will serve to maintain Lockheed Martin's robust position in the Naval market space. As a developing engineer, your role will include learning experiences designed to enrich your understanding of the value proposition that Lockheed Martin provides to our customers. Additionally, you will be able to lead by demonstrating engineering curiosity in customer/internal stakeholder requirements, creating work estimates, proposing improvements, conducting risk analysis and chairing design reviews to optimize solutions prior to operations hand-off.
Technical Tasks
- Mechanical design - Produce requirements-driven Computer Aided Design (CAD) model solutions to be productized for naval environments
- Physical analysis - Optimize structural design margins with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to ensure solutions are suitable for use
- Thermal Design - Optimize mechanical designs considering thermal constraints for cabinet rack-mounted equipment
- Radio Frequency (RF) design - Design systems considering conducted/radiated emissions and susceptibility
- Test Planning - based on requirements develop verification plans to evaluate lifecycle performance of equipment/systems
- Peer reviewing - Ensure work products effectively meet requirements, conform to standards and eliminate defects earlier
- Requirements Reviews- Conduct reviews of internal customer/stakeholder requirements ensuring they are objective and have a clearly defined achievement metric
- Design Specifications - Author specifications detailing design rationale employed to effectively meet requirements
- Risk Analysis - Assess risks/opportunities that may be realized during the development lifecycle.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or the Physical Sciences from an accredited college or university or its equivalent and usually a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience or a Master's degree.
Desired Skills
- Customer Focus: Able to recognize the needs of internal customers and external customers to deliver on requirements. Seek clarity on priorities against timelines. Highlights areas were risk may appear. Suggest/seek mitigation strategies
- Operational Excellence: Take action to ensure internal production and other stakeholders are provided with clear documentation on product designs. Seek remediation/clarity when inputs received are not meeting expectations
- Continuous Improvement: Seek regular opportunities to improve product development processes. Presents suggestions to peers for feedback
- Measuring/Tracking Progress: Show accountability for estimates of work and tracks progress in major tasks
- Adaptive Leadership: Adapts to change by proactively seeking guidance when task priorities are competing. Dealing with adversity, challenges and change with an open mind to improve.
