Original job description
The Senior Software Engineer is a technical leader and subject matter expert who combines hands-on software development with team leadership and mentorship. In this role, the successful candidate will guide project execution while supporting the professional growth and technical development of Junior and Intermediate Software Engineers. The Senior Software Engineer will lead agile software development teams, translating business goals and objectives into actionable technical strategies and driving successful project delivery. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong communication, leadership, and time management skills, along with extensive experience in agile development practices. As both a technical lead and individual contributor, they will actively participate in all stages of the software development lifecycle, from planning and design through implementation, testing, and delivery.
The successful candidate will support Lockheed Martin's existing in-service support contracts, contributing to the development of first-of-its-kind mobile-enabled technology designed to enhance the operational effectiveness of our submarine fleet. In this role, the Senior Software Engineer will plan, coordinate, and execute software development activities, including the design, development, documentation, testing, debugging, and maintenance of software solutions. They will apply established standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the development lifecycle while ensuring alignment with program objectives and regularly communicating progress to stakeholders. Responsibilities also include troubleshooting and resolving software defects, preparing operational instructions and technical documentation, and collaborating with clients and end users to evaluate system capabilities, incorporate feedback, and continuously improve product functionality and operational effectiveness.
This position requires a minimum of two days per week in the office to facilitate collaboration with stakeholders, agile development teams, and subject matter experts across the organization. The Senior Software Engineer will also have opportunities to contribute to broader organizational initiatives through stretch assignments that support business growth and cross-functional collaboration. These may include supporting Internal Research and Development (IRAD) activities, establishing engineering best practices and guidelines, and driving improvements to processes, tools, and development methodologies in support of enterprise excellence.
While Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly available to support software development, the successful candidate must demonstrate the technical proficiency and independent problem-solving skills necessary to perform their responsibilities without reliance on these tools. This is particularly important given the nature of the work, which may involve operating in controlled or classified environments where access to AI-assisted development tools is restricted or unavailable.
The successful candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain a NATO Secret security clearance as a prerequisite for working on classified projects and accessing sensitive information.
The candidate will participate in engineering activities including but not limited to:
- Working in an Agile team environment
- Software requirements analysis and reviews
- Software design analysis and reviews
- Software development, primarily using JavaScript/CSS/HTML
- Unit and E2E testing and documentation
- Integration and deployment

- Mentoring Junior & Intermediate Software Engineers.
- Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
- Proven Full-Stack development experience throughout the software engineering processes from planing, design, development to deployment.
- Experience with development operations with tools such as docker/podman and Kubernetes.
- Proven experience leading Agile/Scrum software development practices.
- Well organized, capable of planning, scheduling, reporting program status and prioritizing work.
- 5-10 years' work general development experience with preference given to experience in JAVA & HTML/JS/CSS
- Eligible to obtain North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secret clearance in a timely manner
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
