Overview
The Government Services Integration Cluster (Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement) is seeking a Senior Back End Software Developer for an onsite engagement in Toronto. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining server-side logic and database architecture for large-scale, multi-client web applications. This role operates within an Agile delivery environment and requires close collaboration with front-end developers, architects, and cross-functional project teams.
Key Responsibilities
This is a fully onsite role based in Toronto at 222 Jarvis Street, five days per week. No security clearance is required. The team follows Agile methodologies and the consultant will work closely with both functional and technical team members throughout the software development life cycle.

This role operates within an Agile delivery environment and requires close collaboration with front-end developers, architects, and cross-functional project teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop robust server-side logic, central database definitions, and ensure high performance and responsiveness to front-end requests
- Translate technical systems specifications into working, tested, and well-documented applications
- Develop detailed programming specifications and write or generate production-quality code
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs and RESTful Web Services to support front-end and third-party integrations
- Integrate front-end elements into server-side applications and support full-stack collaboration
- Apply microservice architecture principles to enhance product extensibility, maintainability, and scalability
- Work with relational and hierarchical databases (Oracle, SQL) including data retrieval using query languages
- Implement and enforce security protocols including JWT, OAuth 2.0, and SSL Certificates
- Conduct unit testing, compile data-driven programs, and perform debugging and troubleshooting of technical issues
- Participate in design walkthrough sessions and contribute to code reviews with the project team
- Support post-implementation activities and resolve technical issues as they arise
- Follow OPS development standards and contribute to Agile ceremonies and sprint delivery
- 10+ years of experience as a designer and developer on large-scale, multi-client web applications
- 10+ years of hands-on Java development experience with Oracle or SQL databases
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with REST APIs and RESTful Web Services
- Extensive experience in modern web framework technology stack: React, JavaScript, Next.js, Node.js, CSS, and RESTful APIs
- Extensive experience with responsive web development and HTML5
- Extensive experience coding for mobile devices
- 10+ years of experience developing applications in compliance with PCI and WCAG 2.2 standards and achieving AODA compliancy
- Experience with JAWS, WAI-ARIA, and HTML5 for accessible application development
- Knowledge and experience with microservice architecture and core architecture principles
- Experience using Azure DevOps for source control, CI/CD, and project management
- Knowledge of security gateways and protocols including JWT, OAuth 2.0, and SSL Certificates
- Strong understanding of Agile methodologies and object-oriented coding practices including design patterns, refactoring, and clean code principles
- Previous experience developing and supporting Driver, Vehicle, Healthy Smiles Ontario, and High Occupancy Lanes services within the ServiceOntario web portal
- Experience with Canada Post Address module and Government Payment Gateway integrations
- Knowledge of rapid application development (RAD) methodologies
- Experience with middleware and gateways
- Familiarity with OPS development standards and processes
- Prior Ontario Public Sector or broader public sector development experience
