Engineer III (Extractive Metallurgy)Position summary

Engineer III is the first level within Lydium's post-licensure Engineering track, designed for new professional registrants with 4-6 years of professional working experience in a technical role. In this role, you are a full contributor to Lydium's portfolio of process technology development projects for our industrial startup clients. You are independent and trustworthy across your core technical competencies, with a at least one area of technical depth or specialization that you take professional responsibility for as the Engineer of Record.

You are expected to deliver defined technical work packages independently, take a lead technical role on assigned scopes with minimal oversight in your areas of strength, and mentor junior consultants and co-op students. You must bring a combination of technical expertise, project engineering aptitude, interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm for hands-on operational experience. You must be flexible, intellectually agile, and possess a good sense of humour to work effectively in a fast-paced, client-facing environment.

Responsibilities

Take a lead technical role on defined work packages, exercising independent judgment in areas of established competency with minimal oversight.
Take independent, professional responsibility as Lydium's Engineer of Record in at least one technical focus area, including sealing documents as required. As a new registrant, you are expected to be the Engineer of Record on some, but not all, of the technical work you perform at Lydium. As you advance further in your career, you will be expected to take responsibility for a ever-broader set of work within your field.
Participate in a leading technical role in the design and engineering of chemical pilot plants, including process design, mechanical design, instrumentation and controls, equipment selection, and layout optimization.
Provide operational leadership and engineering support to Lydium's "in the field" projects during construction, commissioning, and execution phases. Duties could include revising engineering documents and drawings to their "as built" state, performing design calculations to support field changes, assembling data books, leading the preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and commissioning plans, performing document control, and assisting with the collection and analysis of data.
Support techno-economic analysis (TEA) for our clients' innovative process technology concepts, including "idea-phase analysis", technical and commercial landscape reviews, discounted cash flow financial models, examining relevant standards and specifications, and technical trade-off studies.
Build and maintain process and mechanical models and data analysis frameworks in your field of specialization using a variety of software tools.
Mentor junior consultants and co-op students, providing technical guidance and review of their work, including acting as validating experience records for EITs who have worked under you.
Handle client interactions within your technical scope, including some independent representation of the firm on routine matters.
Travel to project sites as needed, including longer-term visits (multiple weeks) during periods of high activity, during which you may be the main Lydium leader on site.
Participate in Lydium's internal project and product development initiatives.

QualificationsRequired

Undergraduate Engineering degree from a recognized 4-year university program.
3-6 years of post-graduation technical experience relevant to Lydium's areas practice.
Minimum 1 year applied, hands-on experience with molten metal processes, such as alloying, smelting, aluminum or steel making, foundry, or electrometallurgy.
Registered as a P.Eng. with the provincial/territorial regulator in your location of work.
Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects.
Eligible to work without restriction in Canada.
Eligible to travel for business without restriction within Canada, the United States, and internationally (visa support will be provided if needed).
Advanced-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
Expert-level proficiency in verbal and written English.

Preferred

Applied operational or research and development experience related to chemical or metallurgical process technologies (non-university).
Hands-on experience using tools to assemble, build, repair, or operate equipment.
Experience using or programming design, simulation, or data analysis tools, such as Python scripting, building process simulations, and mathematical modelling.
Experience working with instrumentation and control systems (PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, etc.).

Other information

We strive to integrate our recent P.Eng. registrants into hands-on, on-site projects so they get maximum exposure to the exciting work being done by our clients. If you are assigned to one of these projects, travel to site may be required, especially when our clients are implementing major design or operational changes. At this level, you will be expected to supervise and support our junior employees while on site.

On P.Eng. licensure at this level. Use of the title "Engineer" is legally restricted under Canadian and provincial law to licence holders. Employees with equivalent overseas credentials, but who have not yet received a Canadian engineering licence, may be considered for this role, but only on a temporary basis. In such cases, Lydium may allow a grace period to allow you the time to transfer your registration to Canada. During this time, you will hold the role of "Consultant", not Engineer, and your responsibilities may be restricted until registration is complete.
