Original job description

Senior Associate, Design Team Leader – Workplace Interiors | Toronto

This is an exciting time at M Moser Associates. As our Toronto office grows, we’re hiring not one but two Design Team Leaders. Each will run one of our business units, one in design consultancy and one in design-build. Each unit has its own team, its own clients and its own annual financial target.

What makes this role different from a traditional design or architecture role is that you’d own the business: the people, the numbers, the client relationships and how the unit grows. You’d also stay close to the work, setting project strategy, steering clients, mentoring project team members and weighing in on design quality where it matters. Taking on the team doesn’t mean leaving projects behind.

You might come from creative design, technical architecture or project management. What matters is that you’ve spent your career in commercial office interiors, you’ve led people, and you’ve carried real financial responsibility.

Two openings

  • Design consultancy: lead a unit delivering workplace design services to corporate clients.
  • Design-build: lead a unit where M Moser carries both design and construction, working with our in-house construction team.

You need experience in one of these models, not both.

What you’d own

Your business unit

  • The unit’s annual financial target, working with office leadership
  • Resourcing across your team’s projects
  • Regular financial reviews with accounting and your project managers, so you know where every project stands
  • Pipeline and leads, built with our Client Services team
  • Setting the office’s yearly goals with leadership: hiring strategy, processes, and which projects we go after or pass on

Your team (up to 10)

  • Hiring, performance reviews, promotions and salary decisions, made with leadership to keep pay fair
  • Regular check-ins with your senior designers and project managers, and focused mentoring where the team is stuck
  • Teaching your project leads how to structure fees on proposals and change requests, plan schedules, build client trust and manage expectations
  • Building the studio’s culture

Your clients and projects

  • Senior client relationships built on open, honest conversations
  • Project strategy: fees, schedule, approach and problem-solving
  • Input on design quality, code review and QA/QC as needed

Growing the business

  • Industry events (1–2 a month) and business development meetings
  • Leading RFQ/RFP responses for larger and high-profile projects, and coaching your team to lead the smaller ones

What you bring

  • 10+ years in commercial office interiors, as a designer, architect or project manager
  • Experience leading a team of at least 4–5 people, including hiring and performance reviews
  • Financial accountability for fees, schedules, resourcing and project profitability. Having run a team or business unit P&L is a strong asset
  • Experience leading corporate workplace projects over 50,000 sf
  • Experience in design consultancy or design-build delivery
  • Confidence in front of senior clients and in a pitch room

Why this role

  • You run a business, not just a team. Targets, hiring, pay and the office’s direction are yours, with leadership behind you.
  • You stay in the work. Client strategy and project direction are part of the job.
  • Design and delivery under one roof. M Moser takes projects from strategy through construction, so you see the whole project.
  • A global platform. 1,400+ people and clients worldwide, with a growing Toronto studio.
  • Compensation: competitive, based on experience and role
  • Hybrid: 4 days in office, in a beautifully designed, conveniently located studio
