Original job description

Our client is Richmond based manufacturing business and is looking for a Design Engineer to join their engineering team.

Working closely with the engineering and product team, you will help define how each product looks, feels, works, is assembled and is maintained. You will turn developing ideas into design options, evaluate their tradeoffs, and refine the chosen direction through prototypes, testing, and supplier feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Develop product concepts based on user needs, product goals, and engineering requirements.
  • Create and refine product designs, including shape, size, ergonomics, materials, and finishes.
  • Design mechanical components, enclosures, internal structures, mechanisms, and assemblies using 3D CAD software.
  • Work with engineering teams to integrate electronics, batteries, optics, wiring, and thermal components.
  • Build prototypes and mock-ups to test fit, function, usability, and performance.
  • Perform calculations, tolerance analysis, and physical testing to improve product designs.
  • Select suitable materials, manufacturing processes, fasteners, and sealing methods.
  • Prepare technical drawings, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), and assembly instructions.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical failures and improve products based on customer and manufacturing feedback.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in physical product design and development.
  • Experience taking at least one product from concept to production.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, loads, fits, tolerances, and fastening methods.
  • Proficiency in parametric 3D CAD software and complex assembly design.
  • Experience creating production drawings and managing design revisions.
  • Good understanding of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFM/DFA).
  • Ability to build prototypes, conduct tests, and solve design problems.
  • Strong design judgment, balancing aesthetics, ergonomics, functionality, durability, and cost.
  • Practical experience working with manufacturers and suppliers.
