Original job description

Title: Engineering Manager, AI-First Cloud Development

Team: Technology

Location: Hybrid, must be within range of our Waterloo Office

About The Role

Software engineering is changing rapidly. We believe AI will fundamentally change how great teams understand problems, design solutions, build, test, deploy, and operate software. Mach7 Technologies is looking for an Engineering Manager, AI-First Cloud Development to help lead that transformation from our Waterloo office. This is more than a traditional engineering management role. We are looking for a leader who can develop exceptional engineers, strengthen our cloud and DevOps capabilities, embrace AI-assisted development, and help make Waterloo an energized center of engineering excellence. Most importantly, we want someone who believes engineering success is measured by the customer outcomes we improve, not simply the features we deliver.

Your Mission

Build a high-performing Waterloo engineering team where people:

Solve meaningful customer problems together
Challenge each other to continuously improve
Use Claude to multiply their capabilities
Build quality and automation into everything they do
Take ownership from design through production
Share what they learn
Move quickly without sacrificing quality
Are proud of the products and outcomes they create

What Success Looks Like

You will know you are succeeding when:

Waterloo feels different because you are there
Engineers are growing and taking on bigger challenges
Collaboration and energy are increasing
Customer problems are visible inside Engineering
Claude is materially changing how the team works
Cloud and DevOps capabilities are improving
Automation is reducing unnecessary manual work
Teams are delivering faster and more confidently
Quality, reliability, and operational ownership are improving
Customers are experiencing better outcomes from what we build

What You'll Do

Build, coach, and inspire a high-performing engineering team
Create a positive, collaborative, and energized culture in our Waterloo office
Develop engineers and emerging technical leaders
Advance cloud-native architecture and engineering practices
Strengthen DevOps, CI/CD, deployment automation, observability, and operational ownership
Help engineers make Claude and AI-assisted development fundamental parts of how they work
Partner closely with Product to understand customer problems before building solutions
Pilot emerging AI-native delivery models, like AI-DLC, adapting them to fit our teams as the practice matures
Encourage engineers to engage directly with customer workflows and outcomes
Improve engineering speed, quality, security, reliability, and maintainability
Recruit and develop exceptional engineering talent
Connect Waterloo with our broader global engineering organization

What We're Looking For

Required

Experience leading, coaching, and developing software engineers
Strong software engineering fundamentals
Significant cloud architecture experience
Experience with AWS, Azure, GCP, or comparable cloud platforms
Understanding of distributed systems, APIs, security, scalability, resilience, and observability
Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD, deployment automation, and infrastructure automation
A track record of improving engineering practices and delivery
Strong customer orientation and product thinking
High standards without ego
An experimental, continuous-learning mindset
Curiosity about how AI will reshape software engineering
Awareness of emerging AI-native delivery models, like AI-DLC
The ability to create energy and momentum around you

Preferred

Experience with AWS, JAVA, C#/.NET, React, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes/container platforms, DevOps practices and CI/CD, healthcare technology, medical imaging, or regulated software would be particularly valuable.
Experience with Claude, Claude Code, or comparable AI development tools is highly valued.
Prior hands-on experience with AI-DLC is not required - a strong foundation in agile delivery and DevOps practices and the strong desire to explore to methods matters far more

We recognize that candidates bring diverse experiences and backgrounds. If you don’t meet every requirement, we still encourage you to apply! Many strong candidates don’t check every box. We value potential, growth, and impact as much as experience.

About Mach7

Mach7 Technologies helps healthcare organizations bring all their medical images together in one place so they can be easily accessed, shared, and used to support patient care. Our enterprise imaging solutions, including a vendor-neutral archive (VNA), enterprise PACS, the eUnity enterprise diagnostic viewer, and teleradiology workflows, consolidate imaging from across the enterprise into a single, accessible source of truth. Built on open standards, including DICOM and a configurable HL7 engine, and free from proprietary data lock-in, our technology lets providers store, view, and share images on their own terms. The result is a simpler, more connected imaging environment that puts data ownership back where it belongs: with the people delivering care. Your data, your infrastructure, your choice.

AI Expectations

Integrate AI into daily work - leverage AI tools to enhance efficiency, elevate quality, and support smarter, faster decision-making.
Apply critical human judgment to AI output - review, validate, and take full accountability for AI-assisted work, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
Continuously improve through AI - proactively identify opportunities to optimize processes, rethink workflows, and challenge existing approaches rather than maintaining the status quo.
Use AI responsibly and ethically - safeguard sensitive information, adhere to company guidelines, and actively identify risks such as bias, inaccuracies, or misuse.

We expect AI to be a core engineering capability. Claude and Claude Code should help our teams understand faster, design better, build faster, test more intelligently, automate repetitive work, debug more effectively, and continuously learn.AI does not replace engineering judgment. We want a leader who understands how to combine strong engineers with AI to achieve outcomes that were previously difficult or impossible. If your vision for AI adoption is simply giving engineers access to a chatbot, this is probably not the role for you.

CLIMBS Culture Code

At Mach7, our culture is rooted in CLIMBS, a mindset that guides how we show up, collaborate, and grow each day. More than just a set of values, CLIMBS represents the standard we hold ourselves to and the way we approach our work, our teams, and our impact.

C - Customer First

Every decision starts with the customer’s perspective. Success = customer outcomes and satisfaction.

L - Learn & Grow

Curiosity keeps us climbing. We embrace continuous learning, share knowledge freely, and invest in each other’s development.

I - Innovate for Impact

We value meaningful, outcome-driven innovation over activity. We challenge the status quo and align behind real customer benefit.

M - Minimize Complexity & Move

As complex as needed but no more. Agility beats bureaucracy. We move fast and stay focused on what matters.

B - Build Good Sh*t

(Yes, intentionally memorable.) Extreme ownership, craftsmanship, and pride in high-quality work.

S - Everyone Sells

Not just Sales - Engineering, Product, Support, Finance, IT. We align behind commercial success to enable company success
