Original job description
At MapsPeople, AI is reshaping how we build software and what our products can do. We are entering a pivotal chapter of AI-led transformation and growth, shaping the future of spatial intelligence and indoor navigation. To support this journey, we are looking for an experienced Senior Android Developer who works AI-first: someone who uses AI coding agents as a natural part of their daily workflow, helps the team adopt AI responsibly and effectively, and still stays deeply involved in architecture, coding, code reviews, and SDK development.
If you are excited by building robust, scalable mobile SDKs used in real-world environments, and want to help define what modern, AI-augmented engineering looks like in practice, this role offers the opportunity to make a broad and lasting impact on our products, engineering culture, and long-term technology strategy.
The Role
As a Senior Android SDK Developer, you will be a key contributor to our mobile platform, focused on building and evolving our Android SDKs. You will work closely with other SDK engineers, platform teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to keep our mobile initiatives cohesive, scalable, and well-executed.
Your influence will extend beyond implementation. You will help shape how our engineering team works with AI, from agentic development workflows to quality standards for AI-generated code, while contributing to architectural decisions, elevating team-wide practices, and supporting an environment where the whole team can succeed.
What You Will Do
- Implement new features in our existing Android SDK, written in Java and Kotlin, using AI coding agents to accelerate delivery without compromising quality
- Maintain and improve the current SDK by fixing bugs and strengthening stability, using AI tools for debugging, test generation, and root-cause analysis
- Lead the migration of legacy Java code to modern Kotlin, using AI-assisted refactoring to move faster and more safely
- Contribute to new SDK versions, written primarily in Kotlin Multiplatform
- Build and maintain binding layers that expose the native Android SDK to Flutter and React Native
- Optimise map rendering and performance using Mapbox Maps and/or Google Maps
- Help define and spread AI-assisted engineering practices across the team, including how we prompt, review, test, and validate AI-generated code
- Evaluate new AI development tools and agents, and share what works (and what doesn’t) with your colleagues
- Contribute to SDK capabilities that support AI-driven and spatial intelligence features across our platform
- Collaborate closely with teammates to ensure consistent architecture, shared ownership, and high engineering standards
- 8–10 years of professional Android development experience, with deep expertise in Kotlin and Java and experience working within large, complex Android codebases
- Hands-on, daily experience with agentic AI development workflows, using tools such as OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar AI coding agents for code generation, refactoring, debugging, testing, and technical exploration
- A critical, quality-focused mindset toward AI output: you know when to trust it, when to challenge it, and how to review and validate AI-generated code in a production SDK
- Strong Kotlin–Java interoperability expertise, including platform limitations, migration patterns, API design, and best practices for evolving mixed-language codebases
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to design, debug, refactor, and improve complex systems. UI and application experience is valuable, but the primary focus is architecture, code quality, and technical problem-solving
- Hands-on technical leadership experience, leading by example through high-quality code, architectural decisions, and technical ownership while mentoring engineers, including helping them get real value from AI tools
- Ability to drive technical direction and influence engineering standards while remaining deeply involved in implementation and delivery
- SDK / framework development, rather than app-only development
- Agentic AI workflows and effective use of LLMs across the development lifecycle
- Prompt and context engineering for coding agents (e.g. writing clear specs, providing codebase context, breaking work into agent-friendly tasks)
- Modular design and maintainable architectures
- Kotlin Coroutines and structured concurrency
- React Native and Flutter, including both app-side and plugin development
- Hands-on experience migrating codebases from Java to Kotlin
- Strong proficiency in Kotlin and Java
- Familiarity with Dart (Flutter) and/or TypeScript (React Native) is an advantage
- Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform is appreciated
- Experience with on-device ML (e.g. ML Kit, TensorFlow Lite / LiteRT) is a plus
- Daily tools include Android Studio, Git, Jira, Confluence, and AI coding agents
You are a collaborative engineer who sees AI as a force multiplier, not a shortcut. You enjoy working on shared platforms rather than isolated features, take pride in building clean, reliable SDKs that others depend on, and like helping teams align around sound architectural decisions. You are curious about how AI is changing software development and eager to help shape those practices, while keeping a sharp eye on quality, security, and long-term maintainability.
What You Get
This role is a strong fit if you want to:
- Work at the intersection of spatial computing and AI, in a company actively investing in AI-led transformation
- Work in an engineering environment where AI-native development is encouraged and supported
- Build software used by millions of people navigating physical spaces
- Join a global team shaping the future of indoor digital experiences
- Have a direct impact on engineering direction, particularly within our Android platform
- Grow professionally, including developing expertise in AI-augmented engineering
- Be part of a diverse, international environment with strong collaboration across teams
- Enjoy a supportive, dynamic workplace with a strong team culture
- Receive a competitive salary and benefits package
