About the Company

Our client is a trusted design-builder that has operated across Canada for over 30 years. They specialize in food processing facilities, cold storage, distribution centres, CNG/LNG conversion, and institutional projects, with project values typically between $10M and $50M. Their strong project engineering and construction management let them deliver everything from industrial tenant improvements and renovations to complex, full-scale greenfield builds. With offices in Vancouver and Edmonton, they are a boutique team of roughly 40 people with a flat structure, open communication, and direct access to senior leadership.

About the Role

Our client is growing its architectural design team in Edmonton and is looking for an Architectural Design Technician to join the drafting group. You will support projects from concept through construction, preparing drawings, specifications, and approval documents while coordinating with consultants, the construction team, and regulators. This is a hands-on role that mixes office design work with site visits, so you will see your designs come to life.

Responsibilities

  • Collate and organize technical building information
  • Assist in developing architectural design, contract, bidding, and statutory approval documents
  • Prepare and submit applications for approval by regulatory authorities, and coordinate with municipalities and regulatory boards as required
  • Prepare designs using CAD and traditional drafting methods, including conceptual design in AutoCAD, Revit, and similar software
  • Prepare specifications, material take-offs, and cost estimates from conceptual drawings and instructions
  • Reference provincial and national building codes to support drawings and specifications
  • Develop architectural models, including physical models and 3D virtual representations
  • Investigate and provide technical input on factors affecting building development, including user needs, site conditions, surveys, and regulatory requirements
  • Monitor designs for health and safety considerations and contribute to risk assessments
  • Coordinate with sub-consultants across architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, sprinkler, and other specialty disciplines, and review and approve their invoices
  • Conduct site visits to verify compliance with design intent, regulations, and codes, confirm existing site dimensions, and review work completed by others
  • Attend meetings with potential and existing clients to provide drawing progress updates and technical input
  • Participate in trade meetings as the design liaison
  • Review, track, and manage shop drawings received from the construction team
  • Coordinate internal and external requests for detailed design information
  • Prepare and maintain tracking logs for shop drawings, site instructions, and addenda, and maintain consultant contact lists
  • Collaborate and share knowledge with fellow drafting team members
  • Research and stay current on new design processes, building legislation, and emerging technologies

Qualifications

Required

  • Completion of a two to three-year post-secondary program in Architectural Technology or a related field
  • Two to five years of related experience in the construction industry
  • Minimum three years of hands-on Revit experience, plus experience with AutoCAD or similar design software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or equivalent productivity tools
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for site visits
  • Ability to reliably commute to Edmonton, AB or plan to relocate before starting

Preferred

  • Certification in Architectural Technology or a related discipline through a provincial association of architectural or engineering/applied science technologists and technicians (for example AScT)
  • Experience on cold storage, food processing, or industrial projects
  • A sense of humour and thick skin while staying professional, which fits the team’s culture

Why Join?

  • Boutique, family-like team with a casual, work hard, play hard culture
  • Flat structure with open communication and direct access to leadership
  • Specialized, high-value projects in cold storage and food processing
  • Organic, project-driven growth with new roles opening up
  • Dental, extended health, vision, and life insurance
  • RRSP match
