What we offer
Reporting to the Vice-President, Total Rewards and HR Technology, the Director, Compensation plays a highly visible role in shaping market-competitive, performance-driven compensation programs across Canada and the U.S. This is an opportunity to influence enterprise-wide and business-specific pay strategy, partner with senior leaders, support Board-level compensation matters, and help strengthen how Mattamy attracts, retains, and rewards talent.
What you’ll do
- Serve as a trusted advisor to HR, Finance, and business leaders, bringing data-driven insights, sound judgment, governance, and practical solutions to compensation decisions across Canada and the U.S.
- Lead the design, evolution and governance of broad-based compensation, commission plans, and short- and long-term incentives aligned with business strategy, market competitiveness, pay-for-performance principles and talent priorities.
- Coach and provide direction to the Manager, Total Rewards, strengthening team capability and ensuring accurate, efficient delivery of compensation programs.
- Strategically develop, maintain and implement compensation tools, processes and policies.
- Act as the internal subject matter expert on compensation strategy, governance, best practices, industry trends, and legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Support the Vice-President. Total Rewards with materials, analysis and recommendations for the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors, senior executive and equity compensation, and broader Total Reward initiatives, as required.
- Lead the annual performance and compensation cycle, in collaboration with HR Business Partners including systems/tools implementation/management, approvals, reporting and governance.
- Assess competitiveness, identify risks and recommend program changes using market data, salary surveys, peer practices, internal equity analysis and emerging compensation trends.
- Lead annual compensation planning and budgeting cycle, including salary increase budgets, incentive funding, workforce cost modelling, scenario analysis and recommendations that balance affordability, competitiveness and talent outcomes.
- Lead job evaluation, levelling and salary range placement processes for new and existing roles, ensuring decisions are supported by validated criteria, market data, internal equity considerations and clear communication with stakeholders.
- Develop clear communications, tools and resources to support leaders, HR partners and employees understand compensation philosophy, programs and practices.
What you bring
- Post-secondary education, preferably in human resources, finance or related discipline.
- Attainment of CCP, CHRP, MBA. or CFA designation an asset.
- 10+ years progressive compensation experience, including strategy, program and short- and long-term incentive design, market analysis and delivery of annual compensation cycles.
- Strong analytical and financial modelling skills, with the ability to interpret complex data, develop practical recommendations and communicate insights to audiences at all levels.
- Thorough understanding of compensation practices, and legislative requirements in Canada and the U.S.
- Experience designing, administering, and communicating broad-based, commission, and short- and long-term incentive compensation plans, including across multiple types of business, such as asset management.
- Advanced Excel skills, including practical use of AI tools to improve analysis, communication and efficiency.
- Strong interpersonal skills with experience communicating with C-Suite and Board-level audiences.
- Ability to facilitate between, influence, and build relationships with key decision makers.
- Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment, balancing strategic thinking with practical execution and sound judgement.
- Previous people management experience.
